Huautla PF Cakes (First Flush updated 2/11)
    #9713526 -

I built a terrarium using the RR method, but my air is really dry because its winter and the house heater is drying out the air really bad. I birthed 6 cakes in my terrarium about 1 week ago, and my first grow (Chitwan) pinned in less then a week but I was using a poor man's terrarium. But this time (Huautla) nothing, I am trying to be patient. I am currently using a cool-mist ultrasonic humidifier in the room to try and keep the humidity up. I give the cakes a good spray and then turn on the ceiling fan to fan it. I have a daylight light bulb on the cakes for about 10-12 hours a day. I leave the lid on, but you can feel the air moving inside, and I have tied a few string on the top to test the air flow, and it is moving. I leave the fan on most of the day, but it seems the cakes are drying out and bruising bad. Is there a limit as to how long I should wait to re dunk them if needed to keep them alive?

dont keep the fan on. moving air threw your fc with a fan will dry things in no time. just fan for 20 seconds everytime you mist. thats plenty of fresh air in a shotgun fc

Just waiting for pins but wondering what other people think about my cakes. Here goes one pic of all 4 angles, and a close up of 2 cakes at a time, one side only though.

Mine look like that after I pull them out of the dunk, roll, then place in FC. But generally within a week, my cakes have turned back to bright ass white with new myc growth and a covering of aerial myc as well. Then once one week goes by, bam, pins. Your cakes will probably still do what it needs to do, but they do seem kinda dingy IMO.

When it became fully colonized did you wait a week to birth? In my opinion this is really important because they dry out much faster if you birth them right away and they take a week to pin anyway. But you will probably see pins soon anyway.

I'm actually doing huautlas right now they are almost done colonizing and I'm about to inoculate some chitwans. How did you like the chitwans? I can't seem to find much info about them on here.

The chitwans were decent for my first grow. I waited a full week after full colonization for the huautlas before I dunked for 24 hours and then rolled. The chitwans were in the jar a lot longer though because it stalled when I didn't remove the tape and pinned in less then a week. The huautlas have been there about 9 days so far and nothing. I am being patient, I just haven't done much cakes and needed come confirmation. Tomorrow I am going to case my first bulk. I have a feeling my bulk is going to pin before my cakes pin.

Pins! Yeah I finally got some pins to form on my cakes. Interestingly enough, I bought an impeller type of humidifier for my greenhouse, and hooked it up to my shotgun terrarium last night. I laughed to myself and said it will be funny if they pin over night. They did!! I will post pics when I get a chance.

Good job man! But hey, those three pics above your last post, well the middle cake looks like it's starting to develop some cobweb mold. The cakes also seem to be a bit dry. Did you dunk for 24 hours in the beginning? If you want to dunk them now seperate the discoloured and sketchy cakes from the rest. They definitely look very dry and because of that they are at way more risk of contaminants. Or, you could put some vermiculite on the tops of the cakes and pour about a shotglass full of water on each.

Where do you see cobweb mold anywhere on those cakes? You should check to see what it looks like first before you go scaring people. And a shot glass of water is way to much to pour on top of a cake you will just wash the verm right off if you do that.

Just mist every time you fan and finish out that first flush then dunk for the second flush and you will be fine.

I thought cakes were more prone to contaminates when WET. Funny...

Very nice this is what I have mainly been growing. Yours are nice and fat. Many of mine were a lot thiner in the stem. Keep the pics coming. My second SB tub is just now developing it's pins. The first tub was cased on 1/15, had a few issues, and was done with first flush on 2/3 so mine took a while as well.

Here goes the new pics of the cakes. I lifted the cakes to organize them, so I can add a few more and some fell off because they were on the very edge of the cakes. Almost floating. And I bumped the big one with my clumsy ass hand.
