delayed pinning PICS UPDATE
    #881122 - 09/13/02 12:02 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

well this ferret was telling me how his cakes weren't pinning yet after about a week in his terrarium by mistake the ferret left a space heater on near the terrarium that he was using while incubating his cakes but turned it off about the 3rd day. the terrarium now has 2 pf cakes that have vermulite on the top and bottom and 2 cakes he dunked/cold shocked the 2 cakes with verm on the top and bottom had some overlay on the top so he scrapped that off and put on a fresh level of verm on those. the humidity is rather high seeing as the terrarium by his account shows condensation on all sides he's tried fanning every 2 days or so and he figures that room temp is about 76-78 degrees so is there any suggestions as to how to make this ferrets cakes start to pin?

well it's about 6 days later and still no signs of pinning on my ferrets cakes the 2 that were dunked seem to be showing some hyphael knots but the other 2 cakes that weren't dunked just seem to be showing either some still growing(very thick) mycelium or hyphael knots forming not really sure wish i had a digi cam to show you all my ferretts cakes but none the less no pinning or aborts on any of the cakes but today he added a 3rd dunked cake and plans to do some fanning today any suggestions on how my ferrett can get his cakes to start pinning are welcome

"but today he added a 3rd dunked cake and plans to do some fanning today"
You have been fanning them all along right?
Might try dropping the temperature a few degrees if you can.
Otherwise cold shocking the ones you haven't yet might help. Then just pray for 'em.

no he hasn't been fanning them every day he's been doing it every 2 days
and my ferrets name is squarenuts, you see squarenuts layed down a layer of perlite mixed with water and peroxide so the humidity has been staying pretty high tonight i'll try to convince squarenuts into getting some pictures taken so you can see his plight of the non-pinning cakes.

Tell squarenuts that he might try lowering the temp just a tade.
My ferret liked to be in the 73 F to 76 F temp range.

Humidity sounds like it is probably ok.

Fan them more.....at least 2 times a day.

Give them light.....hope you are....you didn't mention lighting.

good luck to squarenuts!

From what I have heard , read , and seen , at least 8 hours a day of light is good . "THE BOOK" reccomends 12 on 12 off .
Good luck

Wait, does light initiate pinning? If so, could I just open my chamber up for 30 mins with the cakes exposing themselves ? Or do I need the terr covered for the whole time?

this was my first time posting pics so some of them got kinda fucked up i'll try to upload the last few i got later on today, but anyways this is my ferret squarenuts terrarium and as you can see these cakes just aren't pinning after being in there for almost 2 weeks now also squarenuts is working on a inncubating a casing right now he gave me some pics i'll try to post later but from the advice you all left last night your advice for squarenuts would be to add more light i thought they only needed indirect light or small amounts of light? but if you say 12-24 hours it can be done just wasn't aware of the light needed any suggestions/advice are WELCOME

Damn, close up of the 2nd cake, the growth on the top looks more like a loogey than mycelium.

i have bin thinking about doing this....take an index card and cut it the size of the shroom (maby a little biger) the cut a slit half way down the center of the card and place it under the cap.....it should catch the spores and wont mess up the next few flushed...if any......

DAMN!! I can't find the post from a month ago that had a pic of that VERY SAME idea!! I find it amazing how so many people think exactly alike. This is too funny!! LOL!! Great idea though, and it does work, though it's a pain in the ass... Just pick the shrooms before they sporulate.
