Downward Pins (UPDATED PIC!)
    #423937 - 10/12/01 12:57 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

i had loads of trouble trying to get this cake to pin, but now it's really started. to try and rehydrate it and get it to pin, i sat it directly on my perlite, and noticed a fatass growing upward from the base of the cake yesterday.

i checked the cake this morning, and saw more pins around the base, but then i picked it up (cos it looked like they were going right under), and i see that there are loads of pins growing from the underneath of the cake, straight down into the perlite (they're still around the sides at the moment though).

should i just flip this cake the other way up? or will these pins find their way out from the bottom, once they get a bit bigger?

this photo is of the underneath of the cake by the way. i'm a bit worried about the pins being in the perlite because i think they might start to rot. anyone got any quick advice??

excellent. yeah, the first flush of the other cakes that werent directly on the perlite was much smaller (much fewer pins to start with). the perlite isn't particularly wet, about 2" of perlite, with a small amount of water in the bottom (maybe 1/2").

Im growing directly on perlte for the first time, and there was one cake that was not fruiting well (2 mushrooms). But after reading this thread I went and flipped it over and WOW!!! 3 large clusters. Who needs a Hydropod.

This is my cats first time growing, but he also found that putting the cakes on the perlite worked better for him. His cakes hadnt pinned in 2 weeks, but after putting them directly on the perlite several patches of pins have sprung out overnight. He also has found that some of the pins are growing down into the perlite, is he to understand that they will grow out straight or should he pick them after a little bit.

when you laid them in the perlite how long did it take to pin? and after they pin how long do they take to grow to a decent size?

I had pins from about the middle of the cake and down including the bottom. They all grew fine though.

yeah. i agree with most of the posts here. i have four cakes, and they were sitting on squares of perspex. two of them have fruited once, but very small flushes. the cake pictured was really stubborn to pin, but now it's gone crazy. there's a pin from the top now, as well as loads around the base (they're already coming out from underneath).

looks like this'll be a massive flush. and you're right, i'll never put 'em on lids again!

Ummm your using ms right? So unless you do a side by side with an isolate or a lot of cakes done ms and averaged through a t test, all your results show is that the particular genetics in that cake will allow for water logging or wasting energy colonizing perlite. I bet you would see better results with a proper roll and foil under the cake.

You have a lot if unused fruiting area on that cake and since moisture loss from the substrate is a pinning trigger you are not really doing it any favors.
