do you believe in karma?
    #9593797 -

I have been reading a bit a about Buddhism and I am not convinced that karma is real.
For example i stubbed my toe badly today and it was bleeding alot, the nail is loose and it was very painful.
Now if that happened to me as a result of some bad karma I cannot understand it as I have not done anything wrong or wished anyone harm recently.

karma is fake.

if you are good to people, it increases the chances of them being good to you.

but its not like 'omg destiny has been so fair to me!!'.... that kind of karma is fake in my opinion.

nothing is watching us keepin score about how nice we are (god, santa claus, etc)

you should be a good person cuz its the right thing to do, not because of karma or some book

I think that if someone like a buddhist does some good or is nice to someone only to get good karma then that is shitty.

I do to an extent, i think happy thoughts, make my room feel comfortable, and always try to create a happy atmosphere. Just yesterday my friend felt super shitty so I picked him up and drove wround smoking blunts to cheer him up. Even before the blunts though, the second he got in the car he was like " I dont know what it is about you but you just always make me feel so happy and like comfortable. So I guess it has some legitimacy.

No, not in the typical mystical sense.

I do believe, though, that if you do good things you will gain a reputation for doing so and people will treat you better.

To a certain extent. If you do good deeds for other people, you'll be looked at as a good person(usually) and other good things will happen because of the good deeds.
If you are someone who has bad energy, eventually it will catch up to you and you'll experience something like the bad stuff you've given to people.

It's just like letting the person continue on his or her own destructive path instead of you intervening because eventually he or she will hit rock bottom on that path. That's how i see karma.

Karma isnt some God or Gods sitting on a cloud and rewarding your good deeds or your bad deeds being punished. Karma is a Result of your actions.....cause and effect. Nothing more.

these are all 'dead end', full incarnation responses.

do you know the tao?

think of it like that.

also, it's not like every bad thing that happens is the result of karma.  sometimes you need to learn something.

Yeah but most people take the suffering as some kind of obstacle 4 billion feet tall and never try to get around or over it, instead dwelling on it and continuing on their path. I'm glad you said that though. I believe all suffering has a certain reason for happening for learning something important for yourself.

Not in a strictly tit-for-tat sense.  I'd say being kind to others makes others more likely to be kind to you, and same goes for being an asshole.  It's kind of how I see the law of attraction:  Not in the mystical New Age sense, but if you're tuned in to certain intentions, you're going to be more open to the windows of opportunity that present themselves.

yes, I do believe in it. but, as was noted, not in the traditional western sense.

I haven't read all Budhisms, but have read some Tibeten stuff, not the Dali, but A A Bailey. It's intense and hard to grasp.

but karma is more that just what happens, it's how you perceive it as well.

Karma, as I understand it, is a mythological explanation for the apparent disparity and perceived inherent unfairness of existence and is bound to the idea of reincarnation. I could be completely off on this one. lolz.

No. I don't believe in it.

You're right and that plays a big part in karma. If you are only doing good for your own benefit then you will not receive any positive karma because even though you're doing good,it's a selfish act.

Say you lend someone money with the sole intention of calling up a big favour off them down the line where normally would never lend this particular person money only they have something you want.

They are very greatful for you lending it and pay you back on time. Then down the line you say,"oh remember I gave you that lend now I need a favour off you".

Although a seemingly good act it's still selfish so it's of no karmic value

Karma is simple statistics to me.

I believe in neverending reincarnation, in every possible way, where every possible event occurs over and over again in every possible combination.

You have an infinite number of lives. In them, you will be and experience all that is possible, over and over again.

You can compare this to rolling dice. If you roll it an infinite number of times, how likely is it that you will NEVER roll six or ALWAYS roll six? It is infinitely small, or, that will never happen.

If you roll all sorts of numbers but six, it becomes increasingly likely that the next throw will be six, even though the absolute chance of it will remain one in six.

Or a deck of cards. You shuffle the cards, draw one, check if its a red suit or a black suit, put the card back, shuffle and repeat. How likely is it that you will NEVER draw a red suit? Here's some numbers:

The probability of you drawing ten black cards in a row is 1 in 1024. That means that if you draw ten cards, more than a 1000 times, it will statistically happen only once that all ten cards of a series are black. The probability drops fast. The probability to draw 20 black cards in a row is less than one in a million. Less than one in a million times you draw 20 cards. Try it :yesnod:

If you do the wrong thing enough times, it will become increasingly likely you will do the right thing. Stuff balances out. If you do the right thing a whole bunch of times you are basically setting yourself up to do the wrong thing.

Karma goes both ways. The :smile2: sets you up for the  just as much as the  sets you up for the :smile2:

This is why I like lotteries. In a neverending sequence of lives you will win that jackpot over and over again. If you take a chance forever and ever, you will win forever and ever. In a universe of neverending reincarnation, lotteries are an investment. Take the cheapest lottery that has a grand prize that appeals to you, and dont do any more gambling than that. In the neverending succession of lives where you happen to play a lottery, you will win that multi million fux0r over and over again :yesnod:

You'll never know how many times you played and did not win in previous lives, so the probability of you winmning now might well be humongous. Doesnt have to be the same lottery too, chance is chance. All lotteries on all the planets add up. Regardless of odds and prizes of the particular lotteries, the consistent activity throughout those lives is taking a chance, so it all crunches neatly into one big probability.

If you dont feel like playing the lottery or cant afford to play - no worries. Skip a life. Skip a billion lives. You will always exist and lotteries will always exist. There always is the chance you will play, and the chance you will win. Each and every person reading this has won the superjackpot an infinite number of times and will proceed to win it an infinite number of times.
Welcome to Eternity, home of suffering and neverending partytime :smile2:

Just one thing: don't become a gambler, tying up more money in the game than you can lose in complete comfort. The cheapest ticket in a high yielding lottery will do, stay the hell away from casinos and gambling addiction, because Karma indeed can be a bitch also.

So there's an infinite number of alternate realities branching off on the choices you make?

Hell no.

Take a gram in a cubic inch.

There are only so many kinds of atoms that exist.
There are only so many atoms that fit in a gram.
There are only so many molecules and arrangements of molecules that can be made in a gram in a cubic inch.

Therefore, whatever material things take place within a gram of matter in a confined space, is a finite number. A huge one, but finite one.

Now take a galaxy.

A galaxy has parameters. It can only occupy between so little and so much space, and only contain so little or so much grams of matter.

Ergo: we're well into the googols now, but theres only so many material things that can occur in a galaxy.

There is a finite number of possible galaxies and a finite number of things that can happen in them. If you opt for Eternity and/or Infinity, all possible guises will repeat themselves over and over.

OK one more step back!

Throughout space particles pop in and out of existence. Rarely, a few particles appear in a bunch. Mind bogglingly rarely, so many particles pop into being in close proximity, that a Big Bang is the result.  I read that some scientists calculated that our material universe would last 10100 years and that they expect a Big Bang to be due once every 101056 years in our space.

You know the drill!

Theres a minimum amount of matter and a maximum amount of matter to a big bang. The speed at which it expands is finite. Theres only so many different big bangs there can be and only so much stuff that can go on in them.

We can wait a minute, we can wait a trillion trillion trillion years. We've got Eternity. We pop in and out of existence like those particles and, well, everything. See you at the party man, it's gonna be the best fucking party of any possible universe :birthday:
