Karma

Im taking a Buddhism class for college, and the stuff we have learned about karma is pretty interesting. A personal experience really brought this into perspective. I was driving with a friend in High School, and we saw someone who had been in a moderate accident. We knew the kids went to our school, but didn't know them personally. I was a cocky little teenager with a 2005 Mustang, so I yelled "Sucks to be you mother fuckers!" and did a burnout, obviously pretty stupid and immature. I kid you not, the NEXT DAY, on my way to school a car from the other lane turned left in front of me without yielding, and i crashed into it. It really makes me think about all this karma stuff. What are your thoughts on Karma? Any personal experiences?

Karma is the Just World hypothesis. It's nothing more than another nice little anecdote that people made up so they can feel that our actions here on earth will somehow balance out to be "fair". It's just as laughable as any mythical belief system.

karma is very real and plays a role in my life everyday.

EDIT: I totally disagree dnky. It find it extemely laughable that what hasn't been proven by science so far doesn't exist.

i too was an egotistical asshole, like most, in high school. it wasn't until I blew my mind a few times with mushrooms that I saw myself the way others did. I changed overnight.

i feel that the way I treated people then directly relates to my circumstances now...which is disabled. I try to treat everyone with love and respect thus my life has significantly improved.

This is where I get weird, I have mixed feelings on this. I used to be a real immature asshole in high school to the fullest extent. After high school I got totally fucked in to a downward spiral, and I really almost gave up on life a few times. Recovery has been a hard long lesson, however I learned so much from the experience. I am now a more loving person and every little asshole thing I did came back to bite me hard and all at once. I feel that Karma is just a word, and that everything happens for a reason, but then I also seen it work both ways. So I'm have mixed issues when it comes to this. Do I believe in it, yeah to an extent. I know the word karma got me and it got me good, however it doesn't always work out. The truth is nice people get screwed as well as the assholes, and thats all just part of being a human. Through my experience I learned a lot and became more humble and loving.

I don't see karma as a magical force that will make things even with you, but rather as just a way to remind myself that I may treat people like shit now, or I may cause some trouble right now, but its very likely that sometime in the future someone will be treating me like shit, or that I will have some trouble come across me, and I won't enjoy that at all, so I try to treat people well because thats how I like people to treat me.

So I guess the word Karma serves the same purpose to me as the bible's golden rule "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Not as an actual law that will get me if I do something wrong, but just as a reminder.

I don't think belief in karma necessarily indicates belief in a "Just World."

I believe that people who cause suffering tend to experience more suffering in their lives than those who advocate compassion and non-harming. I believe that those who spread negativity and pain will receive more of it as a result. I believe each act of spite or malice brings a person farther from happiness and fulfillment, and each act of compassion or love brings a person closer. How many mean people do you know who are happy?

To me "karma" is how this principle manifests itself physically. There can be any number of mechanisms for this. Those with angry dispositions tend to invite negative attention from others; those with kind dispositions tend to invite positive attention from others. The bottom line is that devoting oneself to being compassionate and kind results in a much more rewarding and fulfilling life experience than carrying a negative disposition through life. I'm not sure who would argue with that.

At first glance, this principle might appear as if there is some sort of judiciary force in the universe, but I don't think such a thing needs to exist for karma to exist. I don't believe in past or future lives or any mystical explanation for karma. It doesn't need to be supernatural.

i believe in karam very strongly. and this is because i used to just like all of you it sems, to be pretty immature, arrogant and mean in highschool...wheather it was stealing, putting people down and/or emmbarassing them in front of lots of people, laughing at people ect etc. that was mostly when i was a freshamn and sophmore in HS and everytime i look back at that timeframe, i noticed i would just get in a lot of trouble and have all kinds of bad shit to deal with, and i just wasent happy with life. and i strongly beilieve all of that is because of karma.
just like followthemusic said, whatever you do will comeback to you threefold, and my mom told me the EXACT thing once when i was younger.

but karma is definitely real guys. just think about it...doing all kinds of bad, hurtful, cruel, unjust and unecessary things WILL not lead to good things, that would just not make any damn sense watsoever, and its vice versa.


you know sometimes i can pin-point when karma will kick in, and what it happened to me for. for ex. say i see a huge ass 450 lb lady and i yell something really cruel to her like "lose some fucking wieght you fat ass cow" in a car. and i see the look on her face of depression and downess. so ill be thinking in my head while still driving once i pass that moment "man, i shouldnt have fucking did that, that was fucking stupid of me y did i do that", and then like 3 hours later im cooking dinner for my self and im heating up the stove to high and i drop something on the ground and to gain leverage for myself i reach on the counter top thinking im stablizing my self on the counter and  WHAM, i get a palm-full of red hot stove on HIGH and i burn the fuck out of my hand really badly. ill think, DAMN thats my fucking karma for wat i said to that lady,damn:nono:...while my hand is in a cold bucket of ice water unable to move it, or on my way to the hospital.

that was just an example, but things like that happen to me everynow and then, when karma will smack me in the face and ill know y it happened

can any of you sense when "karma smacks you in the face"?

No. But I can sense when something "bad" has happened to me. And my brain can then make outlandish connections to try and rationalize: "why? why did it happen to me?". And then I can either ignore those outlandish connections or I can embrace the bullshit and say "See? See! The world is just and right!" :rolleyes:

I don't really believe in karma at all. Everyone is gonna sit here and talk about what dicks they were in highschool, and then what shit their lives turned to afterwards. Well folks, notice anything common here? Yeah, it happened to everyone. And trust me, it doesn't just happen to those of you who were dicks. It happens to everyone, everyone has shitty stuff happen to them. How it affects your life in the long run has to do with how well you handle it, now how you acted 2 years ago. No one, I repeat NO ONE, goes through life with no hardships, no matter how great a person they are. Karma is just an excuse people make up as to why bad stuff happened to them.

Those things might be true, but they are true for reasons than seem to be common sense. People who inflict harm physically or mentally are more likely to receive them from others as a reciprocated act. Same as what you say about people with angry dispositions tend to invite negative attention from others. Well, of course, if I meet some dudes that are just angry people, then they're going to get negative attention from me (I am one of those people, I tend to have a negative disposition towards things until they are proven otherwise, and I do not get upset when people are assholes to me, it's the only reaction I ever expect actually, because it's the only one that makes sense.) If anything that theory is more dealing with the whole aura kinda thing than karma.
