I don't know which is better (construction or USPS), but as a general rule, the more chemicals in something, the less involvement I want with it. But that's just me. I'm not sure what is better.

I did research. There's no need to be a dick about it.

Tyvek, when used in construction, has to meet specific requirements on flammability just like every other material besides wood or else it could make fires spread quicker.

Thus, all construction-grade tyvek is laced with fire retardant chemicals as well as a few others (couldn't tell you what chemicals or what they do). If you're fine with that, then more power to you. However, medical grade tyvek (as well as envelope grade) don't have those chemicals, and if doctors prefer it that way, then it's probably best for our purposes too.

Jeez, did you just not read my post. All tyvec products are made up of the same thing. The difference between mail, construction, medical is how tight the plexifilaments are woven.

Here is the ingredient list of tyvec

COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Components
Material CAS Number %
Polyethylene 9002-88-4 >98
Proprietary Antistatic Agent 0-1.3

This is tyvec

high-density polyethylene is a high temp resistant plastic used in all tyvec.

I need to be a dick because of the amount of misinformation that is spread through this forum.

If that's the case, it seems like the tighter weave might also reduce airflow. I don't know--I'm asking.

I don't think you were being a dick either way, but I'm not sure it's often necessary to be a dick on a message board, regardless of the reason. Being a dick just tends to close minds.

A more uniform weave (refer to previous pics) reliable in the sense the same amount of moisture and air can be exchanged in.
The weave of tyvec  envelopes are not uniform which means different amounts of air and moisture will be seeping through different spots in larger or smaller amounts

Has anyone done any side-by-side comparisons of the two?

Really? When I ordered mine, it didn't say that I was agreeing to use them only for shipping purposes.

No but it does say on the envelope "This packaging is property of the u.s. postal service and is provided solely for use in sending priority mail shipments.Misuse may be violation of federal law. This packaging is not for resale."

Thanks Damion  I retract my earlier statement.

Anyway.

After doing MORE research on the forum, I found that construction tyvek IS more dense than medical grade, but that's because it's meant to keep water from getting where it shouldn't. One would then assume that medical tyvek is meant for air to flow somewhat freely through it without letting anything else through.

If you're going to pretend I'm your student, then you should know that the more angry a teacher gets, the less the student learns from them.

Re: Tyvek question [Re: Blutjager]

I remember my construction days - we referred to construction Tyvek as simply "moisture barrier." It's put in place to allow the house to "breathe" but permit absolutely no moisture exchange in an ideal setup. This is why mold in houses is much more of a modern problem - the Tyvek Homewrap seals moisture IN as well as OUT. If you've ever had to tear a wall apart to find a leaking pipe you'd see pretty damn quick that one side of HomeWrap can be soaked and the other will be nice and dry.

I've never used either but as Cyrano de Aspergerac said, if I were to consider growing (which of course I won't, blah blah blah) I will definitely use the Office Depot envelopes on six jars and some brand spanking new Tyvek HomeWrap construction grade stuff on the other six and let y'all know what I see.

My activity on this site is a part of absolutely nothing. I don't actually exist, and if I did I'd be too high on weed and oxygen to give a goddamn.
