Cacti stretching in winter
    #9451893 -

I live in an area where it gets too cold to leave my San Pedro outside, so I have to bring them in. I usually put them near a window where they can get some light. Only problem is, it's not enough light and they end up stretching.

Would it be better to put the cacti in total darkness to prevent stretching?

I'm thinking the garage might work... It's cold and dark.

Nah, If they stretch because there's not enough light in your window imagine what locking them in a dark closet will do!

It would be better to place them under a grow light.

Reach for the sunnnn.

no, if they are in a cool dark place they hibernate (go dormant)

light has little to do with dormancy, light or dark makes no difference.

most important factors: just withold water and keep them cool, easy stuff...
an unheated garage is fine so long as it doesn't get below freezing :yesnod:

artificial lights are fine for overwintering smaller trichs, but when they get a bit taller even a high wattage hps wont prevent them from etiolating.

I thought Pedros could handle slightly below freezing temps? That's what the interwebz told me.

sure they can, but it's better not to subject them to freezing temps if you can avoid it.
they will freeze if the temps are below freezing for too long and we all know what happens to cactus tissue when it's frozen..

A basement or garage should be fine.  That's where i put some of mine...whatever fits. I usually stop watering about a month before they come inside.  I keep em under an awning or soemthing to keep rain out.  Especially in big pots, leftover water can keep cacti active, and with the limited indoor light, they stretch.  Warm temps can

Btw,

I hear cold weather can keep your penis from stretching too

There's some pics of a few of my cacti.

is that a solar panel at the base?

I wonder if i can throw a towel over my pedro to keep it from growing since my garage is heated and lit up, and it's too cold outside?

Yeah it's a solar panel. My mom got these solar powered LED spotlights that light up the plants at night for a few hours. Pretty cool looking.

Parent's are taking care of the cacti while I'm at college, they're doing a pretty decent job other than watering them a few times last winter :nonono:

As uare said, you want them cold and dry, lighting makes no difference.

lighting makes a difference if there is enough light to encourage skinny growth...

how cold do you mean?  trich's are pretty cold resistant cacti.

Tee, it depends on how warm your garage is.  In the low 60's is perfect.  50's is even better.  Mid sixties will work, although you may get s little stretching IME.  This can be corrected for the most part once growth resumes.

Putting the towel over is not necessary. It's more about what that heated temp is you talked about.  If the other factors (heat/water) are still good enough for the plant to grow at all, the darkness will not help on its own.  I tried putting a cup over the tip once, and it only made it strech more because it was REALLY looking for light.  Stretching is the plant;s attempt to reach up in search of better light.  (It can also be cause by excess watering) Average room light is usally not enough to encourage growth if the other factors are not present.

I personally believe temps to be the number one factor, followed by water then light.

Cacti can still grow off their reserve water, but with the cold added in they seem to stop easily.

Lighting makes no difference.  Light doesn't really encourage growth in these guys, it's just one factor in determining the thickness of their new growth if they happen to be growing.  If they are etiolating during winter, then the problem isn't giving them insufficient light, it's keeping them in active growth.  They can't grow skinny if they aren't growing.

As for cold, the cacti need to know it's winter.  Indoors is too warm and they think it's time to grow, hence etiolation.  Where I live, winter is waves of warm and cold weather.  But the cold happens enough that they remember it's winter and I keep them dry to keep dormancy going.

If it's too cold where you live to keep them outdoors and you don't have a garage or anywhere indoors to keep them cold and dry, then you gotta take them inside and some etiolation is almost unavoidable.  Giving the cacti any water while they're indoors is putting fuel on the fire.

The etoliation can still be minimal.  I keep a certain part of my collection in the main part of the house.  The pedros are the only ones that really etoliate (65-68F, often on the lower end), and it's usually just the tip getting a little light green. My spachianus does the same...maybe even worse.  The ones in colder parts of the house wont do that.  But in my earlier days, when I did not stop watering in advance, I had much more etoliation.

I'd say the combo of mid 60's and no water is just about the limit of dormancy.
