If peat is bad for cacti because it encourages rot...

...then how come it's a main ingredient in all the commercial cactus soils? Surely all these companies can't be clueless. I keep reading on this board that peat causes the soil to be more acid and that it encourages root rot, especially when fertilizers are used. It seems very unlikely that all these soil companies are selling peat-based soils as being specifically designed for cactus growth if peat is actually bad for the cactus's roots. I must be missing something....

It's irradiated. But you could sterilize even after you buy it. I don't like commercial cactus soils very much, it's mostly very dry peat and lots of perlite.

A mix of sand, clay, rocks soil etc.. is a good cactus soil.

Pumice, gravel, some dolomitic limestone pellets, pebbles, and a little bit of coir makes for some good cacti soil.
