Today I overballasted my lights so now there 2x 4' 80w. I just took an extra ballast, plugged in the light wires into the extra holes in the sockets, attached the + and - incoming wires, and bolted the ballast upto the housing. It didnt turn on right away fully so i turned it off and back on then it lit up. It's a big difference! Only downside is i had it up and running and then i accidentally turned it off and now its not turning on fully. Im going to let it cool down a bit then give it a try.

I also re potted the two slanted pereskiopsis plants which are my oldest at about 2-3 months old. Surprisingly the roots werent deep at all, only about 2" deep. There still in the same pots but deeper and better positioned and i now have rocks at the bottoms.

Im going to be buying some growrocks, ferts, timer, ph test kit, and tubs and make a nice little 1-1.5x2-3' E&F table and convert everything to E&F but the seedlings. I already have a rio 50 pump thats perfect for the job. I figure i should get some experience under my belt with hydro and E&F is a cheap and simple system to get started with. Ill do it all in the same 4" quart pots that i have hundreds of.

im nto sure i get how you wired it but flouros usualyl need a ground. teh most common problem with them not turning on (rubbing often gets tehm going, or a bump etc) is lack of ground. probably misunderstood what you meant though.

I just wired in another ballast so wherever there was 1 wire there's 2 now from withing in the second ballast. It worked but i think i blew out a bulb because its an old one and had a black ring on the end. Now its glowing purple at the black end. Im going to buy some new bulbs tomorrow and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Yep just wired it in parallel.

So it turns out the bulbs arent bad, its the ballasts. I got it to turn on last night after plugging in 3' 30w bulbs. Then when i unplugged and plugged it back in it went back to not turning on fully. I removed the second ballast and tried it as normal and it still wouldnt turn on fully. So im dam sure I f'ed up the ignitors in the ballasts. :frown: Im going to try to get my hands on some ballasts for 6-10' bulbs and wire them as normal but with the 4' floros. For now its back to the norm 40w per bulb.

My best guess is the ignitors dont like being wired together.

Lesson learned.
