I am very interested in learning to meditate. I was wondering when one does meditate, what are you trying to accomplish? Peace of mind and or clear mind? or are you seeing yourself in other places and comunicating with some other being?

theres many many different ways to meditate, but if i were you, id stick to the old and true methods. following your breath is a good one. when meditating your trying to focus your mind completely on the breathing, once you learned that, you can practice just sitting, keeping your mind completely placid. look it up on the web too.

Meditation is about inner focus.. going within. You are trying to gain clarity of mind... a state of silence. You do this by simply going within and observing your thoughts. No effort is required. You are just the observer.
Usually it is easiest to start with something to focus on... like the flame of a candle. Gaze at the flame... try to focus on just the flame. This concentration helps you to focus. Soon you can look within at the inner flame and observe it.
Do not try and suppress thoughts, rather, let them flow. Just watch them pass by...no interaction is required.

I think that meditation is usually diferent things for different people. One method probably won't work for everybody. Following your breathing is definitely one way to try and start with. Just basically sitting down and trying to relax your mind and body for a while is meditation. I have tried many different ways of meditating...The best technique depends on who you are and what you are feeling like at the moment. I have tried listening to music etc.
Unfortunately I have not experimented much with someone else or in groups. I have heard that this can be really powerful.
Some philosophies aim to quiet the mind while meditating others focus on bodily sensations. If I were you I would experiment with different things. I don't however suggest going out and buying a bunch of books and "equipment" this is how modern Americans usually do things. Don't worry about stuff or books just sit down in your room and eventually you will discover your own personal technique. Many techniques try to quiet the inner dialogue, you know your thinking voices. You are naturally in this state when you are just abou to fall asleep or when you just wakeup. It can be extremely difficult to shut off this dialogue but if you succeed it is really trippy. Meditating you can trip out as much as on shrooms.
Experiment with new things. One thing I have tried is: When I woke up naturally in the middle of the night I sat up and got into my meditating position. I started meditating still kind of asleep. It was really easy to shut off my internal dialougue. I began to notice stange thoughts popping up in my mind. I would all of a sudden "see" extremely realistic scenarios. I assume that these were the beginnings of dream sequences and that somehow part of my conscious had "snuck" into the realm of my subconscious. That is the only thing I can think of to explain this.
Anyways meditation is a powerful tool of self exploration... Good luck!
By the way what martial art do you practice?

Meditation is simply concentrating on one thing and only that one thing.
Concentration on nothing will yield an experience every bit as powerful as DMT.

That is samatha meditation. There is also vipassana meditation, which is insight meditation.
