i use meditation as a tool to relax and clear my mind. meditation before you trip can help you start the trip with a clean slate. your body will be more relaxed, and your mind will be cleaner for the trip, thus increasing your chances for a better trip(at least, thats my opinion)

Meditation is something to be learned. I've only just begun recently, so the other shroomerites that meditate can probably give you better answers. I got inspired by a religion class I took in college. WE meditated for the first 15 min of each class.
I suggest sitting or lying in a comfortable position in a dark, silent room. Relax your body so there is no stress whatsoever. breathe deeply, and clear your mind completly. Concentrate on one aspect of your breathing, such as the rise and fall of your chest, or the way the breath feels leaving/entering your body...this is hard to do at first, and thats why meditation gets easier over time. you just need to work at it. good luck

there is another post on meditation somewhere around here.......hope i helped

This is a big question, but I'll give the basic run down of the techique I learned passed down to American Teachers by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. His books will help clarify any questions and help you understand why to meditate.

At the starting point, meditation is meant to tame the mind. All the time it is jumping hither and tither, constantly reinforcing inaccurate notions of who we are and what we think the world is. To truly experience ourselves as we are and the world as it is we need to be able to sit with ourselves in the world and practice just being. Just being is harder than we might think it is, so that is why we practice.

The technique is to sit crosslegged in an upright posture, with your ass a few inches higher than your knees. Keep a straight spine, your eyes open and rest your hands comfortably on your lap.

Because we don't know how to simply be, we need a reference point which is the breath. As you settle down, loosen your shoulders and neck and focus on your out breath. Follow it as it dissolves into space, and wait for it to come back and go out again. So we constantly let go of our breath. Since our minds are not trained we need to be aware of our thoughts. The teaching is to "touch and go". We don't follow out our thoughts, we notice them, and let them go. The idea is to not get caught up in fantasies and plans and all sorts of other things, but we should be aware that the mind is thinking when it is. Don't try to stifle your thoughts, (it is impossible), just let them go. Relax and stay with the breath. The gaze is a feet in front of you, and relaxed, not looking at anything in particular. This practice is known as shamatha, or "calm abiding". It will improve the quality of your life.

hope this helps..
taming your mind is the perfect wording for it inbetween. our minds are constantly distracted by three things

mulling over past expiriences. what should i have done in that situation? why did my girl/boyfriend have to leave me? how should i have responded to that person?
planning for the future. how am i going to find a new job? how am i going to get my lazy ass into college? should i do laundry and then shower and then water the lawn or should i..?
and analyzing the present. whats that noise? im not focusing hard enough! i feel rediculous just sitting here staring off into space, what if someone sees me?

keep in mind my favorite concept of all time, be here now. dont worry about what happened or what will happened, just accept whats happening at that instant and go with it.
also remeber that distractions have two parts. a stimulus raises a thought, and then your wild mind runs with it and forms an elaboration.
now a very simple book i once read suggested mimicing a video camera on record, just expirience whats happening objectively. focus on your breath like inbetween said, hell everything inbetween said is good accurate info, but two last tips that i find helpful: be aware, dont concentrate. and if you find yourself losing focus of your breath, dont get angry.. just drop the offending thought you find yourself in and go back to breathing. sorry for the length.
