How do you analyze a poet?
    #9262943 -

I have to write a paper.. I have to analyze a poet..

When I got the assignment I was thinking yeah sure this'll be easy as pie.
But now that I'm sitting here trying to start it I'm wondering what the hell am I supposed to write?

I could analyze a poem.. but an entire poet?
Any ideas? I'm baffled and quite frustrated.

I really just need direction here. Thanks in advance.

its best to analyze poets when you are on opiates, you should take some opiates

Hmm that seems like a good place to start.

I chose Robert Frost.. cause I love his stuff..
but sitting here trying to figure out to analyze HIM and not his POEMS, realizing it was a strange request.. Maybe I should just review some of his poems and call it a paper?

I hate doing that shit all together. Especially when you get a bad grade when it's your own damn opinion.

Analyze things like his childhood (general upbringing/parents), teens, later life, any stylistic devices he uses often, the tone/mood of his works which should relate back to his childhood. As you look into these things you'll probably dig up interesting tidbits and you'll be able to weave a complex web of "analytical bullshit" haha. Some of those topics can actually get very info-heavy, so just remember to relate it back to his 'unique writing style' and possibly the genre of poetry he writes.

Anyways, hope this helps!

Do you have to stay with Robert Frost because Sylvia Plath is a wicked easy one to analyze!

I wrote 2 papers on her in high school. She had a messed up childhood. Tried to kill herself multiple time. Got electron shock therepy and other fun stuff... Ultimately she wrote a lot about dark depression and such and ended up killing herself. Her poetry kind of mirrored her life.

Awesome! Thanks, I'll try some of those techniques aswell as reviewing one or two of his smaller works. That should give me a good portion of the body of my paper

That sounds like an assignment i could definitly get into. I would probably choose Saul Williams, who happens to be this poet/musican/actor.

Mm I am jealous of you. It is rather difficult for me to get into what I'm writing unless I start it well... not stumped

I'm just going to give this whole thing a HUGE stab in the dark, not entirely SURE what I'm supposed to be doing...

I'll throw it up here when I complete it, but I promise it will be garbage.

I can't very well put EVERY poem into it while reviewing them (i've decided to just review a line here and there from random poems and a couple full poems [short ones])

but as I said I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm REALLY just bullshitting it.

Here's a couple facts about RF to help you get started:

-He wrote every poem in the first person
-People in his family (including himself) had bouts of mental illness (his sister was committed young into a mental instiution where she died)
-The Atlantic Monthly originally rejected a bunch of his poems and later (after he became known) when they asked him to submit a few he gave them the same ones they had earlier rejected
-Frost once said" I would have it written on my grave stone:I had a lover's quarrel with the world
-His daughter irma was also commited to a mental institution
-He lived an farmed in NH before his poetry career took off but he was not originally from NH
-His work is usually associated with "life and landscapes"
-His poetry style was that of traditional verse forms and metrics (rhymes and such)

Got all that from a few websites off a google search...
Hope this helps!
