Were you required to take a personal stance, as you did in the last paragraph, as part of the assignment, or were you merely to summarize Kierkegaard? This would have an impact on your grade if such a testimony was not called for (I am an adjunct professor at local colleges and universities, at the graduate level, but I have taught undergraduates).

Also, it is impotant to realize that no matter what the defining relations, the religious world-view is 'teleological,' there is a 'master-motive' which strings it all together, and lends direction to an Ultimate Goal.

matts reply is a case in point, Markos.

Matt, I will get back to this when I can give it the treatment it deserves.

Cheers,

You are not 4, but if you are, you are a very bright little boy!   Teleological means purpose or design. Human being-hood, or existence is purposeful. It has meaning and direction. No matter what kinds of relations we have with other people, or what kind of positions we hold in life - all of them serve a higher purpose. Our spiritual life has to do with discovering how everyone and everything we have been given, serves that purpose.

Everything we are given, or every situation we are thrown into, is a part of a giant puzzle. We strive to put the pieces of our life together to see the Big Picture. It is the Big Picture that gives meaning to all the people and events in our lives. The Big Picture is that meta-motive - that all-encompassing Reality that organizes all of our life experiences. We can't see the completed picture til our lives are completed, but one can get a sense of what the picture is, as the pieces begin to fit together. The development of our lives into that Big Picture lends meaning and direction. If we don't even get a glimpse or idea of what the puzzle is about - we despair. Life is just happening, with no apparent meaning to any of it. All we then know, is that it ends. We despair instead of becoming filled with awe and wonder (true religion).

Does any of this make sense, or am I sinking even deeper in verbal quagmire? *Gulp*

i liked your original post on keirkegarrd (sp?) i think more posts in this forum should be oriented around actual theories and philosophies. the usual string of ponderings and gibberish gets old.

Maybe you might despair, I'm filled with awe and wonder everyday without having to assign meaning to any of it.

*gasp*
That would entail.... no, no it can't be..... READING!!

Unless it's esoterica, I the majority (minus the 5 or so people that probably have a decent shelf(ves) dedicated to philosophy) of the people here know where they stand as far as actual philosophies/theories go.

I'll bet buttons to navy beans that you're under 35 years of age. When the optimistic world-is-my-oyster of youth begins to wane, you will see what I mean. How you respond to the 'second half of life' will pivot on this issue.

P.S. I'm experiencing my 42nd year of this life. A little bit of gray starting to creep into my scalp, a bit of a paunch on my mid-section, constant physical pain in my knee and shoulder, a mortgage higher than a lot of people's incomes, a deep awareness of the fragility of my existence and a sense that I'm watching humanity repeat the same ignorant mistakes of countless generations. However, I have faith in myself to always handle whatever is thrown at me, I can accomplish whatever I really want, I make my future from the raw materials that life gives me, the future is always uncertain and I like it that way (I get bored easily).

Life is fascinating, exhilarating, beautiful, mysterious and not always predictable. How can you not enjoy it? If waves are crashing all around you, you might as well learn to surf and enjoy it. Get my drift?
