Cortisone Shot

I've had tendinitis in both my arms that was brought on by excessive rock climbing for a while now.  I've been icing and taking aspirin every fucking day but it just won't go away.  Does anybody know how hard it would be to get cortisone injections from a doctor?  I mean I'm not above walking in and demanding one. I don't generally get pushed around by doctors, so I'm pretty confident I can get one, but is this the sort of thing they give to normal patients?

The doctors I go to typically admire you doing something like seeing that you know what you're talking about and how to treat yourself. It should be fairly easy to get a cortisone shot from a good doctor.

I've had several of them and I can assure you that it is not pleasant. I'm usually sore from the shot for 2 days before I start feeling better. The shot its self hurts like hell and it's a really weird "injection" pain. Like something is expanding inside you and it burns like hell.

Have you used it long term and what have been the results?

From what I understand cortisone shots should be avoided if at all possible - damaging to connective tissue. 

OP: Have you tried using some stretching regimens?  How long has it been bothering you and have you taken a complete break from what aggravates it and if so for how long?

Well, all of my problems that required cortisone were in connective tissue... Elbows, hips, knees, wrists. It works amazingly well for those sorts of problems, but it is definitely a last resort. If NSAIDs work then I won't consider corticosteroids. They tend to have horrible side effects, particularly prednisone.

I got really bad poison ivy and got a cortizone shot for it, and i had an allergic reaction to the cortizone and had hives and poison ivy.

I've had the tendinitis for about 2 months now and it's not going anywhere.  It really sucks because climbing and working out are two big stress releivers for me so I'm going a bit stir crazy.

i've had several myself. its a really thick steroid and takes a while for it to spread out once injected. hurts like fuck! but no, not a problem to get a doctor to give you one.

I would insist that they numb the injection area with a lidocane shot. That burns for a few seconds but makes the cortisone shot much less painful.

I would think that the doctor would be hesitant to give you a cortisone injection so that you can then continue the activity that led you to need the injection in the first place.  If you get this injection and experience relief as a result, you are liable to go out and continue the same activities and in the process injure yourself even more seriously. 

It sucks, but maybe you should just take some time off..

I've taken time off for quite a while, the problem is that daily activities exacerbate the problem.  If I went back to climbing after the shot I would take maybe 3 weeks off first and then ease back in, taking ibuprofen first each time and icing afterwards each time.  I'll be very cautious, so I think I should be fine.

In that case, i don't see why you wouldn't get the shot.  Rest is the only thing that will allow any kind of real healing, so be sure that you don't rush your rehab when you start feeling 100%.. wait a bit longer.

Also, don't take more than ~1500mg of NSAIDs in a day.  Don't forget to stretch.

Prednisone is scary shit.  I've had to take it a few times at varying doses for Crohn's Disease inflammation ... recently I was taking it at a fairly low dose for a month or two, and one night I had a psychotic break from reality, had suicidal thoughts (NOT like me) and couldn't see even a glimmer of hope in life ... this all happened within two hours.  I felt numb to everything in the world and felt like it was all over ...

Once I realized it was the prednisone, I dropped that shit, and fast.  I'll never take it again, no matter what.  Nothing is worth feeling like that, and since stopping, I feel like myself again, happy and optimistic.  Prednisone FTL, for real.
