What musical album had the most impact on your life?
    #9142301 -

I saw this thread posted over in Music, Art, and Literature, and figured it'd get a broader audience over here.  Also, I'm curious as to whether the most significant albums that people say changed their lives were listened to during early adolescence; as psychological studies into the nature of music and neuroplasticity point towards the brain hardwiring towards musical preferences during this stage.

So let me ask you: what musical album shaped your life the most, and how old were you when you listened to it?

For me:

Most significant musical album:
Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral.

Age first listened to:
14.

The album that affected me the most, in my youth, was Willie Nelson's Redheaded Stranger.
Mainly 'cause my step-dad listened to it constantly.

The album that afffected me the most, as an adult, has to be Pink Floyd's The Wall

Kinda strange that both albums tell a story.

Pink Floyd's Darkside of the Moon, first listened to it at 13 years old, far before I even smoked pot or did any drugs.  Life-changing wouldn't even begin to describe it.

The only other album that influenced me as much as DSOTM was Mars Volta's Tremulant ... it seriously pushed the envelope of my mind in ways nothing else ever has ... I never knew music could be so raw and real and just mind-blowing ...

I think it may have been Misplaced Childhood by Marillion. I think I was 14 at the time and I think that was more significant than the exact record. It's still not a bad one though.

theres been a few: grateful dead livedead i heard all thru my youth(from my parents) talking heads remain in light as a teen, but when in highschool the first phish album (junta) changed everything for me: learning to play guitar, it was the most inspiring thing i'd ever heard, and probably still is (beautifully complex).

Undertow - Tool

I can explicitly remember the first time I heard sober, I was 14 and instantly hooked.  The entire album is perfect to me, and it would be really interesting to know how many times I have listened to the whole thing. D:

For me its not so much an entire album, but one song was very influential to me.  I posted about it a few years ago.  That post (including the song, its lyrics, and an explanation as to why it affected me so much) can be found here.

i had heard bits and pieces of this album since it came out through various family members but the first time i heard the album in it's entirity was probably in 1999 shortly after i got my first computer.  life changing to say the least, it made every album i listened too seem way way shittier by comparison.  i still compare albums to this day to vulgar.

I had never heard anything like Dark Side of the Moon when I first heard it when I was about 12 years old. Pink Floyd was a staple also in my high school years, getting high and going to see Dark Side of Oz (wizard of oz played with the Dark Side of the Moon album over it). When I was 12 years old I was also listening a lot to a Canadian band named Our Lady Peace - the first album I ever bought was Clumsy by Our Lady Peace and I just really got into the band.

Fuck yes.  IMO it was a tie between this one and Downward Spiral.
