Actually it is reported(oss&oeric) that a slightly acidic(5.5-6.5) is the preffered ph level of the substrate and casing.

in TMC it has an almost basic casing reccomendation.

Personally I would trust Stamets advice over terence meckennas. I would gues that it would probably grow well in a fairly variant ph, but nutral(7) is preffered so that you can have some changes without pushing the fungus off. I would be willing to bet that substrate ph, and casing ph play a major role in contamination of the pre-colonized substrate, when and if that happens.

Hey yeah, a slightly acidic ph is conducive to the development of green mold.
