no 1/2 pint jars

I am a newbie to the whole mushroom growing experiene and find it every interesting. by the end of the week I will be starting my first grow and I have encountered a slight problem. I cannot find the 1/2 pint jars the smallest I can find is a 1 pint jar. Do you think that it would be okay if I just doulbe all the dosseges and ingredients to make the cakes or would that not work.

are the pint jars tapered so the top is the widest? what kind of jar are they? keep in mind that youll quadriple the chance of contams and itll take twice as long to colonize.

1/4 pint=5% of contams, 2 weeks to colonize
1/2 pint=10% of contams, 4 weeks to colonize
1 pint=20% of contams, 8 weeks to colonize
2 pint=30% of contams, 16 weeks to colonize
4 pint=38% of contams, 32 weeks to colonize
8 pint=44% of contams, 64 weeks to colonize


and so on!!!!!!

8 weeks? From my EXP it is around 4-5, when grains; even faster. But I dont wanna argue. You might be right.
The contam part is %100 right.
But if he cant find 1/2 pints, what is he 2 do?

The Jars a Bell Wide mouth 1 Pint Jars. Wish the 1/2 Pint jars were around in my area but I cant find them.

then buy 4 pint sized jars and 4 drinking glasses of 1/2 pint and if the pint jars get contam or too slow, you have the 1/2 pint glasses which may be fully colonized by now.

My buddy innoculated 6- 1pint jars and only lost one to contams. Like everybody has said, they'll be fine, but they'll take longer to colonise. Good luck.

I know you probably looked already, but if you go to walmart, they'll proabably have 1/2 pint jars.

when i started a couple of years ago, i used double shot glasses. i had 8 of them. i cased 'em and got a good yeild. just put foil over it and hold with a rubber band

isnt a shot glass like 1.5 ounces so a 2x shot glass is like 1/5 pint or 3 ounces?

If you can get the pint jars then use them.
Most of us use them.
And some ppl don`t use them, choices are fabulous

Pint jars work perfectly fine are you going to sterilize them with a pressure cooker?? My very first time I used pint jars as if anyone here would remember it was the first post I ever made and it asked if I could do this same exact thing.

I sterilized with a big pot instead of a pressure cooker and didn't lose one to contam my first time around after my caked were ready to flop out for their birthdays I cut them in half and layed them sideways inside my terranium you don't have to cut them in half they work fine if you don't although one time I didn't cut a few in half and the bottoms got weak the cakes tipped over but that only happen once I suspect it was something other then the fact that I hadn't cut the cakes in half I had very large flushes that time and I was using a HUGE EQ print for innoculation alot of the phat asses came out on the bottoms of the cakes so I think that is what made em weak

ohh ohh yeah instead of the standard four holes poke an extra one RIGHT In the middle of the jar lid trust me you'll appreciate me having told you this I tested it six of my jars and left the other six without holes in the middle the jars that I put a hole in the middle had bigger flushes then the ones that didn't have a hole in the middle

I'll create a log about mine next time around perhaps showing the use of pint jars and detailing the time it took to pin and how many were lost to contams.

Another tiny piece of advice is just try to get your first flush before attempting casing;) but another small piece of advice casing does increase your FLUSHES A TON!!!!!!

Spend a day just looking at every food store you can think of and you will find a major chain that will have them in stock it took me 7-8 tries before i found the kerr 1/2 pint wide mouth's. They're in a yellow box btw. Also remember to try ghetto locations as they usually seem to be more in stock. More populated busier stores usually never have them from my exp.

Wide mouth pints will be fine. Better for grain, but will work fine PF style. I've had pints of Creeper and Eq's fully colonized in about 3 weeks with no contams. Just keep your work areas clean and you'll be fine.

You can order 1/2 pints on line , will cost more due to shipping . Go to www.doitbest.com , do a search there for canning jars .
If you have any stores in your area that cater to the hispanic community , try there .

I'm going to have to disagree with LSAuser on this one...

I did a batch of 1/2 pint PF tek jars -- Colonization time ~25 days
batch of 1 quart jars -- Colonization time - 12 days!

So far no contaminations... I did the oventek method (not sure how much that ACTUALLY helps, but worth a shot)...

I believe the best method is to use quart jars (with a bulk substrate such as millet), but make sure they fill at most 2/3 of jar (after pressure cooking and shaking around a bit)-- otherwise you are going to have much longer colonization times.

Goto wal-mart, they have kern half pint for like, $7 for 12 of them. lids and all.

Have you tried the jam (or jelly?) section of your local supermarket?  I found that Nutella Chocolate Spread comes in a nice shaped jar,,,looks a little less than half a pint, but that'll just mean it'll colonize quicker :smile:
