I despise when people fail to interact due to the shield of courtesy.
    #9052825 -

Example 1:

I'm waiting in line at this grocery store called New Seasons. This hag in front of me is having some problems with her card or something so it's taking a bit. Then the bagger in my line points to another register and sends some woman behind me to the register on the other side. Then I see there is another cahsier waiting so I pick up my stuff to head on over but some other old hag takes that line. So I put my stuff back down right as the guy in the register to my right opens his after he's been standing there for 5 minutes. Right when I go to grab my stuff someone takes that register. Now keep in mind that I don't care. It was funny and the register I was at is ready now anyway.

Me: Wow, each register was open and taken as I turned my head!
Him: Sorry about that sir, it won't happen again.
Me: No no no, it's okay. I just thought it was kind of funny.
Him: Again I'm deeply sorry. May I have your signature, please?

That store usually pisses me off because they expect you to be an uptight yuppy who will get all sore if they let their hair down a little. Sure they are pretty helpful, and let me sample whole fistfuls of fruit, but they interact with me like I'm going to sue them if they so happen to show some emotion.

Example 2: I don't really feel like going in depth here anymore, but this guy who owns the auto clinic always is so serious with me. Like I'm trying to catch him making fun of my truck.  . Maybe if I brought him some beers sometime he'll finally ligthen up.

Anyway I can't be guilt free about this myself. Sometimes I can be pretty stiffly polite with stangers, and for some reason am kind a stickler about ettiquette. Though more often than not I'd rather have a more humanly connected experience. Even on Hawthorne Blvd. here in Portland a lot of the mom and pop store clerks can be stiff even though it's supposed to be a really laid back street.

I've spent to much time in customer service to not be a little stiff with strangers. If someone calls you at CS though, you can bet your ass they aren't exactly giggling with joy.

Working retail does that to ya.

I'm always apologizing for things that aren't my fault.

most people working a register don't want to talk to the customers.  it's bad enough having to fake a smile, let alone make/fake conversation

Cashiers are just one example of a million people who are bound to keep you comfortably numb from interaction, demius. Thousands of other people we interact with do this, even students or other people waiting on the bus.

did you ever stop to think that a lot of people don't like those sorts of interactions?

example:  last nite at the beer mart, standing in line.  a male about my same age (21-24) was buying a gallon of beer.  i had to wait for the cashier to finish filling his gallon while i stood there holding my beer.  they have some obama/mccain, who are you going to vote for, piece of paper taped to the counter.  the guy decides to strike up a conversation with me about who i'm voting for and did i watch the last debate and so on.

completely unnecessary and pointless small talk (read as: dribble).  he had little to say about the matter; and the two other people behind us looked as if they were wondering why he had brought it up at all

i can understand being polite to other out in public, but unless one is in a setting that is more oriented to conversation (like a sports event, or a music show/festival, a bar, etc...) what is the purpose of having conversations with strangers?

I was having a conversation with my daughter in our local grocery.  As we approached the cashier, I tried to include the cashier in the dialogue.  "The flies are really slow this year.  Have you noticed?  You can grab them right out of the air."
The cashier responds, "Uhh, yeah... I suppose."

Daughter of course has told me before, "When they ask you how you're doing, Dad, they really don't expect an honest answer."

Point being, I've gotten to know most of them really well and enjoy the interaction.

To be human. You're bringing up another topic, sorta.

What I'm initially bringing up is the fact that people can become so stuck in courtesy they become a slave to it. Afraid to talk outside of their bounds in fear of something unknown.

What you're bringing up is small talk. I used to be one of those who hated all forms of small talk and thought it was retarded no matter what. Now I realize that there are some cases where you want your privacy and don't want to start up a conversation. That's fine. But usually we have nothing better to do, so why not? What important things do we really have to think about all day that we can't have meaningless contact with other people? Isn't it healthy to dip out of our constant mental stessors to just chill for a little bit? At my job I can choose to linger a little and chat with a chatty customer, or cut the convo short and go back to thinking about how much my job sucks and think about what I'm doing tomorrow or what I did thirteen years ago. But I can do that anytime. The moment with the customer is an event then and there, and something outside of my bounds. Isn't that more special?

I frequently spark up conversations with strangers, even in little single serving moments like dealing with a cashier or a service person.  I try to feel them out to see if the are interested in being engaged before I start talking about something, because I don't expect everybody to reciprocate.

I find when I go out of my way to talk to people they are glad I have, and they even want to prolong our conversation despite the superficiality.  Even at local grocers I've met people by name by just being engaging.

Sometimes people are overly apologetic, but that's a good time to rescue the moment and make light of the situation like Pyro did, although that person was lame.  Observational humor and quirky facts makes for good single serving conversation.  Sometimes real friends can spin-off of those situations, too.  Socializing is humanizing, IMO.

Maybe people don't want to interact. I personally don't want to engage in conversation with 99% of the people I meet. Politeness and courtesy is just an acceptable way of telling people to fuck off.

I'm all about faking empathy to get ahead at my job and to let the customers think that I give a damn.

shield of courtesy.

It's deadly. I have lost a few jobs because I say just whats on my mind a little too often. But ya know, it's one of the things I like best about myself.

Man I cant even do that.  I'm a really good worker and do absolutely everything I'm supposed to do, but my boss always gives me shit about acknowledging poeple more.  They should ask me how I'm doing, I'm the one fucking working.:tongue2:

Im a college student so I work part time in the deli of a supermarket owned by safeway corporation to make some cash.  When I was "trained"(aka figure everything out yourself because the manager decides to be elsewhere doing who knows what), they gave me an outline of everything that I need to say to the customer.  Starts with like a greeting then has a list of possible greetings, then about a few things followed by a parting comment.  I was so stoned while I was reading that I dont remember anything in the middle, not that I would have followed it any way. Im just polite with people and havent gotten in trouble yet.  Most of the other people are so robotic though, they say almost the same thing word for word to most customers.

Hahaha.

Probably the most memorable line in what is otherwise a pretty terrible movie.
