Depression and Vitamin Deficiencies
    #9049804 -

Article

Deficiencies in a number of minerals can also cause depression.

Magnesium: Deficiency can result in depressive symptoms, along with confusion, agitation, anxiety, and hallucinations, as well as a variety of physical problems. Most diets do not include enough magnesium, and stress also contributes to magnesium depletion.

Calcium: Depletion affects the central nervous system. Low levels of calcium cause nervousness, apprehension, irritability, and numbness.

Zinc: Inadequacies result in apathy, lack of appetite, and lethargy. When zinc is low, copper in the body can increase to toxic levels, resulting in paranoia and fearfulness.

Iron: Depression is often a symptom of chronic iron deficiency. Other symptoms include general weakness, listlessness, exhaustion, lack of appetite, and headaches.

Manganese: This metal is needed for proper use of the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. Since it also plays a role in amino-acid formation, a deficiency may contribute to depression stemming from low levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. Manganese also helps stabilize blood sugar and prevent hypoglycemic mood swings.

Potassium: Depletion is frequently associated with depression, tearfulness, weakness, and fatigue.

LSD: Low amounts in your brain may cause ordinary reality and washed out colors.

Wonder how CBT will help deal with a mineral deficiency... :strokebeard:

Funny, many of the world's most depressed nations have widespread access to vitamin supplements.

That's the answer to depression: magnesium. Who needs psychology?

While I am sure it could be a factor I was never more depressed than
at a time in my life when I was taking daily multivitamins.

Seems you are misreading.

Vitamins do not treat depression unless you are suffering a deficiency.

Hmmm...and are the countries where vitamin deficiencies are extremely rare also the countries where depression is extremely rare?

C'mon, you're reaching here.

I wonder how fasting plays into this? In such a state where available minerals and nutrients are seemingly quite low, people usually report positive effects and a clear mentality.

Oh, was it research?  It seems to be an about.com article with absolutely no reported methodology.

Once again you win. People with scurvy and rickets and beriberi are among the happiest people you will ever meet.

Keep in mind that zinc is involved in at least 100 enzyme systems in the brain alone. So, it's a very important trace mineral.

Depression is very low in fish-eating countries such as Japan. Might be an Omega 3 link there somewhere.

Hold on. I think I have a link on harassment and depression...
