Well the bank I'm with (HBOS) is one of the main mortage providers.. consequently they're getting owned by all this financial turmoil.

They're in the progress of being taken over by Lloyds TSB, but they're starting to think fuck that (or so I read).. so it might not happen.

Having my money in paper form is still somewhat concerning, cause if some sort of mass economic crisis does occur, then all I'll have is enough kindling for a couple of fires :frown:.

The fed's new banking reserve system is a good idea and will provide assistance now that other mechanisms have lost their effectiveness (we are nearly in a liquidity-trap situation).  They just adopted a system similar to the one the ECB uses:  paying interest on bank reserves that used to yield no returns.

This system allows banks to cover their ass (by holding their cash for the new reserve rate), or be productive with it and make loans @ the FF rate.

This system is desirable for two reasons:
1) It gives the Fed more control over demand, and
2) By allowing banks to collect interest on their reserves, they are not forced to seek out high-risk loans in order to achieve returns on their capital.  (See below: XX)

XX- A lot of blame for this situation has been placed on Greenspan's rate cuts in the early 2000s, which led to the FF rate being dismally low (~1%) and ALLEGEDLY prompted banks to begin making these subprime loans (that are now imploding and fucking up everything).  Now that banks have the option to sit on their reserves and still earn interest on them - their overall ability to maintain operations will be greatly strengthend.

As far as pulling your money out of the banks goes:  The only reason your bank will fail is if everyone takes part in this practice.  The reason all these banks are failing is because they don't have enough assets maturing to cover their due liabilities.  What's a sure-fire way to ensure that they have a more difficult time doing this?  Pull your money out and take away more of their liquidity!

Bank runs yield bank failures - bottom line.  For proof:  look into the past.

Right now your money is FDIC insured - and it is foolish to imply that this government would allow the entire country to go for weeks without providing adequate aid.  Simply foolish. 

I feel like all your threads (WC) are breeding the type of hysteria that causes a situation like this to get worse and worse.  People talking to other people about topics they don't understand just breeds wrong information and poorly-thought out decisions. 


Despite all that:  I did go out and buy a few cases of ammo yesterday.  If something does go down - me and my Glock 19 will be juuuuuust fine.

Look how well the Gov't handled Katrina. Just one single city in the USA. Their failure to act made the catastrophy possible and the way they responded made it worse still.

That was one city. You have a standing army that can invade large nations, you can throw billions at a problem - and look what happened? One screw up after the other.

Now imagine how adequate the response would be if :shitfan: on a nationwide basis.

Take your own fate in your own hands - the Government won't catch you when you fall, and millions fall with you.

And you talk of weeks - imagine living in a city where a million people had nothing to eat for 3 days.

edit2:  Any response to my comments on the Fed's recent actions?  Your post made it seem like they were making horrible policy decisions - when in reality it was a smart move.  Thoughts?

what does it actually explain?  nothing.

but you have the same viewpoints as all the hysteria-ridden girls I hang out with that are all (coincidentally) INFJ and ISFJ.  I think it's the 'F' that gives you all the "feeling" that things are going to hell.

Most of my econ friends and the one professor I know about are INTJ, ENTJ, and some ESTP.  Key letter:  T.  Key observation- not feeling like the world is ending.

Im an ISFP, and feel(not think) percieving rather than judging makes the world of difference.

I reckon it takes all kinds though.

In the past I tested as ESFP, INFP,  and INTP though so I reckon Ive changed over time

My analysis was sound (albeit shallow).

F's make their decisions based primarily on their feelings on the issue, not based off of analysis void of emotion (Ts)

I'm an ENTJ.  strong in all indicators other than N.

my only comment here is:

if the economy does collapse and everything fails, do any of you really think the money you have is going to be worth anything at all?  what would be the point of people accepting federal reserve notes in exchange for food, when those same federal reserve notes have been completely devalued?

yep, that my decisions are based on rational thinking and properly analyzed to the fullest extent possible :smile:

I analyze things to such a great extent it's practically a personality flaw. 

Anyways, I digressed waaaaay off topic - my apologies for that.  The movement toward MBTI type was probably in poor taste, as nothing got accomplished as a result (I abhor inefficiency). 

I must head to class - farewell.

Also, i'm still looking to hear your opinions on the Fed's actions that I commented on.  I feel they're pretty sound moves, but I am open to hear any disagreements you may have with them.

The only way we will ever get our country back is to take it by force, there is no peaceful or political way to do it. We are ruled and we are meant to be ruled, we are the peasants and peons, our numbers are greater yet our will is smaller. The fear mongering has left us but a shell. The fascist promoted through media has prevailed. Our lives are no longer our own, we are but simple drones. We do as we are told and know not why. and i kind of feel the same way, i dont think the big crash will happen yet, i think theyre going to figure out a way to prolong this a few more years before the BIG one happens.

my fiancee just got the last piece of her final school loan, im going to see if i can talk her into taking a couple thousand out and just sitting on it for now.  she believes the economy is in trouble, but not like we see it.  im not sure if she is convinced enough to take money out, but im going to try anyway. what could it hurt?  in a few months or so if nothing has happened and she wants to put it back in, thats up to her.

unfortunately for me, i have little money right now.  moving and trying to find a new job has taxed my reserves dry.  and there are no hopes of replenishing it any time soon, since my new job doesnt give me enough hours OR enough pay.

In the event of minor bank runs: the money is insured

In the event of major bank runs where the money becomes devalued: so will the money that you keep under the mattress.  Also, any idea that gold will be the new currency is a pipe dream.  Food, guns, and possibly sex slaves will be the new monies.  People will use gold to throw at each other.

So the only reason to take money out of the bank is to spend it.
