Should I trip to Metal?
    #9005184 -

This is something I've been debating for a long time.  Most of my trips skirt the topics of Human pain and suffering and death, but I deliberately avoid giving them any significant focus during trips.  I feel I may be ready to examine them more thoroughly now, and one of my intentions is to throw some serious Metal into my next trip. I'm familiar with most of the band recommendations and such, I like Meshuggah and Opeth and Into Etenity, Dimmu Borgir, Human Abstract, Slayer, etc.  I'd like to know if any other trippers have given Heavy Metal trips a shot, and if so, what are some recommendations for things to beware of or focus on, or whether to avoid the whole ordeal.

Tentatively I'm going to lead in with Modest Mouse's Lonesome Crowded West, my favorite trip album, leading into an hour or so of some of the aforementioned bands, and some lighthearted stuff like Dragonforce, and fall out with some Superchunk and The Shins.  Speak on it brothers, what say you?

I wouldnt, unless it was Speedmetal. Speedmetal is awesome while tripping. The closest Id come otherwise would be heavy grunge.

Id like to trip at a Gwar concert though.

That makes sense, I imagine you can really fly on speedmetal.  I was thinking I could really dig into the deeper, moodier black and death metal.  Being fed to the beast at a Gwar concert while tripping would be awesome.

I say go with whatever you want. Last trip I listened to NIN - The Downward Spiral and it was sweet. Different types of music but both can be 'dark'.

If you do listen to metal make sure they have a good drummer.  I don't trip that often but I can't imagine listening to some one pound on a snare for 40 minuets.

Heaven Shall Burns CD Antigone has really good music all the way through as well as amazing classical interludes.

Fuck yes, metal is definitely intense while tripping.  The vibe for Dimmu Borgir and the like with death growls doesn't really fit well with psychedelia IMO, but anything with clean vocals and a powerful feel and you should be good to go.

For any industrial aficionados, try listening to Skinny Puppy's Too Dark Park while tripping.  :minigun:

I love metal but the vocals get to me when I'm tripping.

Try some of the new instrumental metal bands like Pelican, Earth, Meniscus, Bossk, Solaris, etc.

I would recommend Isis or Pelican, slower more instrumental metal. I enjoyed stuff like that much more than I enjoyed anything extreme or hardcore. Listen to explosions in the sky? Not metal, but it's intense when tripping.

Maybe it's just me, but metal is often positive and uplifting--even despite the intentionally brash vocals that bothers some people.

A limitation to some mainstream metal is the first person nature of the lyrics, and because they are typically negative, I can't see where it would be welcoming to a deeply psychedelic experience

Are you referring to Canvas Solaris by chance?

Oceanic was the first thing I heard from Isis so I'm a bit biased. But Panopticon is definitely amazing.

... I love metal. Despised Icon, Heaven Shall Burn, All Shall Perish, Inveracity, Caliban, Man Must Die, Parkway Drive. I could go on. Would I base a trip around metal music? Fuck no. I like to stay away from any sort of negative vibe when I am on any psychedelic. I prefer electronica of various types. It puts out a much more positive vibe for me, and most times greatly enhances hallucinations. If you are looking to delve into human suffering, it can all be done without music, with metal, electronica, rap, whatever. It doesn't have to be specific, in my opinion. I have talked about suicide while listening to Pitch Black (NZ). I've talked about a lot of darker things while listening to electronica. I guess it just depends on your personality.

To some, fallen trees are ugly. But in reality, it is the circle of life at its finest. This is a beautiful world, its time that we recognize that before its all gone."
