restraining order and gun ownership
    #8919666 -

7 years ago a buddy received a restraining order against him from his father. I'm not exactly sure what occurred but since then hasn't had had any contact. The problem is he wants to buy a gun now because he lives in a run down area and I'm worried for him because I know when he goes to buy a gun he will have violated federal law but he isn't fucking listening to me. Why are people so stupid? You DONT need a gun. Fucking move to a different area of town if its so bad:thumbdown:

you can't buy a gun seven years after a restraining order???

They just won't let him buy it if he's a felon, right?

is the protective order regarding domestic violence? I believe
it's the only exclusionary factor, regardless he can see a judge
and try obtaining a firearms permit, then he can own a firearm

there's nothing wrong with buying a gun unless your intent is to kill someone

I don't know if it was domestic violence. Don't think any actual violence occurred other than words that shouldn't have been said!

No, when you get a restraining order against you that's it. No more guns for you in any US state. Trying to buy a gun is immediately illegal and the popo will come a knockin at your door.

From what I've just read the ownership restrictions only last as long as the restraining order is valid.

Well, thats a matter of opinion.  If you don't want a gun then don't get one.  But saying a person doesn't need one is pointless.  Theres lots of things in life we don't need, but what I really don't need is someone else telling me what I do or don't need!

and to mario, i guess your friend will find out when he tries to buy one now wont he? the worst that will happen is they will tell him no,  but unless that restraining order against him is still active, he shouldnt have a problem.

i dont think a restraining order, at least of that magnitude prohibits gun ownership unless its DV

It is every Americans right to own a gun. I don't need one, but it's nice to have. When someone agrues that i don't need one, i tell them that you never know. Plus i just fucking want one. I would buy many more if i could afford it. Guns are fun!
