I would agree a lot of these articles contain dubious action, and I'm all for limiting the government's ability to put us under surveillance or control.

But even the patriot act hardly amasses to a Totalitarian state.

An odd socialist police state, maybe in the next 20 years it'll be as bad or worse than the UK or anything Orwell imagined.

There are a lot of ingredients missing for totalitarianism, and we still have time to change the country.

Because they'd snatch your ass off your couch, take you away from your SUV and cable and replace your fast food with an MRE and drop you in the middle of a fucking war zone that you don't even agree should be a war zone.  I think a draft would make young people actually care about whats going on.  I mean a draft is essentially getting arrested and going to a prison thats even more likely to kill you then actual prison. . .while being totally innocent.  I think that might incite a bit of protest..not that any amount of protest or voting would actually change anything.

And see thats the thing..people in other countries get the wrong idea that we support what our government does.  Or that we have any say in what they do..All we do is vote for people who make decisions.  After they are elected they could decide to nuke the whole fucking planet and we could do shit about it.  MOST Americans are pretty disgusted with what our government is doing..but its not our people doing it.  Its our government..big difference.  We have no say in who they go to war with or what they enforce on us.  Like this draft. .if Bush 2.0 gets elected and he reinstates the draft theres absolutely dick we could do about it other then become Canadian..and thats not so easy for a lot of people.

Charlie Rangle has been advocating the reinstatement of the draft for years and I think he makes a good point.
If if there was a draft both the rich and poor would be sent off to pointless wars.
When the rich(the ones who make decisions in our world) started seeing their kids rather than the faceless poor's children dieing. when its their kids there will be less willing to send troops(not just the poor but their kids too) of on some dumb shit.

I hope that post was somewhat coherent and if not i apologize. too many xanax.

I dont necessarily disagree with a draft, you brought up a very valid point. its not like they draft college kids. maybe that would drive some of these American hating Americans out of the country. I really get quite sick of Americans complaining about freedom, it shows how ignorant they are about the conditions around the rest of the world (not saying we dont have problems but we do need to be grateful for what we do have)

that's true but the fear of losing your kid can definitely sway perception of weather a particular disagreement is worth fighting over.
the same idea would work if it was mandatory for all 18 year old kids serve for a year. Sure the privileged would be less likely to do much dirty work but there's no telling for sure. These fuckers talk tough but would think a lot more rationally if forced to rather than not worrying because "hey, it's not my kid".

Spock was the only poster here to mention that democrats are the ones pushing for a draft in the house, not republicans.  The fact that you think a republican would institute a draft instead of democrats who have been advocating it all along shows either a) your just a partisan who hates people with an 'R' next to their names and will lie to convince other people or b)your completely ignorant to the modern political landscape.

I support a draft, because I think it would make people wake the fuck up when their brothers and sons are being forced against their will into military service.

Plus, I wouldn't get drafted since I'm a full time student, a math major/comp sci minor.
Even if I did get drafted I'd be running reactors on carriers or something and probably not even seeing combat.

I think its more so that more people will speak out against the war. It honestly seems like our country is completely numb to this war going on in Iraq and Afganistan. Its quite sad really
