Purple is an emergent property
    #8916702 -

Atoms are NOT purple.

Molecules are NOT purple.

Masses of certain molecules as viewed from a distance appear purple; therefore this is proof of non-physical reality.

So goes the piss-poor thinking on another thread.

It's difficult to think critically with todays education. It's so piss poor. Then to add the fact that humans are so emotionally vulnerable to fear and anxiety and they will begin to believe just about anything.

I must have missed the other thread, but I drew this up the other day to try and explain the concept of "emergence" to a friend.

You have two or more sets that come together, to create the appearance of an additional one.

Purple need not be considered a "thing"; it is an action, and a part of the process of vision. Just like a wave isn't a "thing", it only appears to be.

I would even suggest that concepts like "god", and questions like "where did we come from" are the result of these same properties. Without language, such a thing would be completely meaningless.

I dont think purple is an emergent property.  The property of purple does not depend on complexity and is not a collective phenomenon, one atomic transition can make a photon with the wavelength of purple.

But I guess that is not the purpose of this thread anyway.  I can never quite get threads in this forum....

Purple is a property, not a thing in and of itself.

An object is purple if light waves bouncing off it reflect back a specific wavelength and absorb others.

What is the difference between a property and a thing in and of itself?

A property requires a thing to have the property in the first place.

Purple cannot exist without an object that has the property of being purple.

Sounds like a circular argument to me.  All we can observe are properties.

Well I dont know, purple is a bad property to use because that is a property of light not of matter.  Stuff we observe has the property of mass and volume, things like that.

Personally I cant think of any 'thing in and of itself' without begging to its properties, so I cant really distinguish between the two.  I mean, things are defined using their properties, so I dont see how you can separate the two.

This is true to some extent, but there is a fundamental difference methinks.

We can refer to a thing, certainly--I can point towards a chair and you can acknowledge its presence.  Technically speaking, you can obfuscate matters by saying that all we recognize of the chair is its properties (i.e., color, size, weight, etc...) but realistically speaking you still acknowledge the thing itself.

This is contrarily to saying that one can acknowledge the pure color purple, which can't exist on its own.  Something has to be purple--the purple can't have no thing to apply to.

When this purple emerged onto the property of a street, the neighbors got really upset. :yesnod:

a purple object is really anything but purple. it absorbs all wavelengths of the visible electromagnetic spectrum and rejects the wavelength that is interpreted by the human eye as purple. :smirk:

Semantic games aside, take a purple object then look at it under a microscope and keep upping the magnification. The 'purple' will mysteriously disappear.

When I stub my toe purple emerges, and so does pain.

I don't really like it, but somehow it makes me feel strangely alive.
