tamp & mexicana questions

Well my first one I guess is after I have transfered an agar wedge to grass seed and it begins to colonize is it safe to shake? Is it safe to shake sclerotia? My next question is does the substrate need sclerotia to fruit or can I fruit with a minimal amount of sclerotia. Also say I open a colonized bag with sclerotia is it safe to break mycelium up in pieces to case? These questions are for both tamp and mexicanas. Thanks to all of those that can help. Sorry one last question has anyone tried a more nutrtional substrate then just rye grass seed, and if so was there a difference in yeild?

hi
i assume you wont need to have sclerotia to start fruiting. sclerotia is a mechanism that protects P. mex/tamp. from dry weather periods etc. thats what i think. hmmm. at least stamets said so in one of his books ... maybe.or not hope I helped

You can definately shake the substrate before sclerotia forms but I wouldn't do it after. Otherwise you are dislodging the mycelial network that supports the growth of the sclerotia. I imagine the network can regrow but shaking isn't necessary at that point anyway.

So I cant take a bag of mycelium and sclerotia and case unless I keep it in the form of the bag? So that means it takes longer for sclerotia to produce (even in small to minute quantities) then it does for the bag to colonize? So sclerotia is not necessary for fruits do devleop with mex or tamp as it is with morels or other fungi? Also for the sclerotia strain of mex that sporeworks has is it necessary to have sclerotia before fruiting and what about tamps? One more annoying question how long from initating pinning does it take till fruits? Also I have heard of people adding extra nutrition to there rye grass seed is it actually in there benefit or just a pain in the ass (what do they add?)? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes
So that means it takes longer for sclerotia to produce (even in small to minute quantities) then it does for the bag to colonize? So sclerotia is not necessary for fruits do devleop with mex or tamp as it is with morels or other fungi?
With mexicana soon after colonisation (in a matter of days) small sclerotia are formed. There need not be big sclerotia in the casing to get fruits. This species can also form mushrooms directly on the substrate.
Also for the sclerotia strain of mex that sporeworks has is it necessary to have sclerotia before fruiting and what about tamps?
One more annoying question how long from initating pinning does it take till fruits?
With mexicana the first fruits can appear 8 days after the casigns are exposed to fruiting conditions. Tampanensis takes longer
Also I have heard of people adding extra nutrition to there rye grass seed is it actually in there benefit or just a pain in the ass (what do they add?)?
No need to add anything to the grass seed. The stuff itself is pretty nutritious. Experiments with malt extract and peptone did not show any difference between supplemented and non supplemented grass seed.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was told sclerotia wasnt necessary for fruiting but if I layed the grass seed down and let it regrow back together in the tray and let it sit for a week or so till sclerotia starts producing will that allow for a larger flush and or bigger fruits?
