So, I saw this not so bright guy being slammed for defending the military.  Granted he did it the least effective way, not doing anything at all to dispel this stigma that we are all just baby eating blood thirsty animals.  So being in the USAF I felt the need to offer some insight into why we actually join the military and what kind of people join 98% of the time.

We're guys AND girls just getting a job man...its a pay check.  We are not blood thirsty psychos.  The military offers a lot of benefits and perks that are hard to beat when you are 18 years old.  Free college while you are in and now a massive GI bill when you're out are pretty incredible jump starts to a successful life man.  Thats why we're here.  Most of us came from not so rich families where college was pretty much out of the question..or maybe their home life was WORSE then a combat zone..its out there, I see that one a lot.

For a young guy with a wife and a kid its nearly unbeatable unless your in the trust fund club.  They fully pay for any medical care for your family, your housing, your food, your education..hell they pay for your spouses college education.  Oh and then theres your actual pay check..How do you beat that at 18-20 years old?  I'm a single male about 25 years old..I make about $35k a year with full medical, dental..everything, after all that stuff I just listed.  I go to college for free, when I'm out I'll still go to college for free and they'll STILL pay for my housing. 

I guess I thought maybe you guys didn't realize all the stuff they do for us.  Thats why I'm talking up the good side of it so much..see how this can lure in young men and women?  This is the draw..not murder, not blood, not raping and pillaging.  Also we're not all Bush zombies.  Many of us disagree with the worlds current events just as much as you do.  And for the vast majority of military that doesn't even affect us.  I've never been to the desert.  Oh and the dumb redneck conservative stereotype is just like any other stereotype.  If you're throwing that at all military people you're no better then any other racist/bigot.  I guess if you're a suburb kid who has the luxury of parents who can pay for all of this then you cant really understand.  And good for you but for the rest of us its a very good option..hell it could even be a lot of fun.  I've been to Thailand twice and all over Japan many times.

You're showing the other side of the coin that not many people in this society see and you also make some very solid points.

On the other hand, when I was 18 I attempted to enlist in the marines. I said some things about how it'd be sweet to kill people etc. and some other kind of fucked up things. I wanted to be infantry and see people die and not get a prison sentence for it. I was roiding at the time and they were describing guns so I kinda got too far into it. They never called me back and wouldn't answer my calls.


Other people don't realize that it's not the soldiers making the choices about the war, it's their flawed "elected" officials. I'm proud of every person brave enough to enlist with this sand nigger shit going on.

I wonder how many enlisted people actually take advantage of the college benefits after they are through.  Probably not many, which is why they offer it.  If you weren't smart enough and ambitious enough to go in the first place you'll probably never go.

Case in point:  OP, is 25, why don't you have a bachelors degree yet?  Lets see, if you did 4 years after high school that would put you at 22, then three more years of college.  You should be almost done right?

I love the way most people in the military slam college kids for being "trust fund kids".  The funny part is:  Any one of these "trust fund kids" will be your superior for minimal effort, simply because they have a degree.  You refer to them as "officers".

So thats that.  You put down college kids, but the exact same military institution you work for places them above you as "officers".

Go take that hill and get shot soldier, thats about all you'll amount to.

Uhh, if he's full-time military, I'd be willing to bet that he's not going to simultaneosly take a full load of classes. He also never said that he started classes right out of boot.

Sigh..I just tried to maybe show that not all of us are the knuckle dragging ape that in another thread on here. 

As far as being bought..maybe.  We're all bought in some way, if you work for wal-mart or gap you're supporting an equal or worse evil.  Oh and like I said, I've never pointed a gun at anyone or been in a war.  So your paying taxes puts as much blood on your hands as mine bro.  I know I'm a cog in a machine that kills people but so are you.  A funny way to look at it is I'm costing them a ton of money but you're paying them haha. And yes I'm full time military, so full time school is impossible and I didn't join until I was 21..I tried working some BS job and paying my way through college.  This is much easier and smarter.  I have zero loans..zero debt and everything is free.  Sure its slower but I wont be paying back student loans until I'm 40 either.  I'm not calling all college kids trust fund babies.  Trust fund babies dont even need college lol.  But I'm saying there are poor..I mean poor kids man..thats me.  College just wasn't happening realistically.

And as for the hero remark..I could give a shit about your freedom or any of that stuff we dont even really have.  I'm just doing a job.  And sorry to disappoint you but I'll never be in the line of fire.

A lot of people sneering at the military in this thread just have a myopic view of things. We need armed forces. The problem is how imperialistic we've been getting but that's everyone's fault for electing the officials who make these choices. Don't blame the guy on the ground. And if you've never had to be in the military like me thank god but don't think for a second it's a free ride. It's paid for by the soldiers, airmen, marines etc. who go to war in your place. Recognize that enlisting can be a perfectly sensible decision and have a little respect for those who choose that path. Damn ungrateful hippies.

Oh yes, son.  You really make your points well.  People who say anything about rednecks is a racist/biggot, and anyone who disagrees with anything you say is obviously just a rich suburban kid with a trust fund and mommy and daddy paying for everything.  :rolleyes:

Go out to war in my place? Its more like serve in unjust wars created by the corporations that run this country. Wars that this country has no business being in. Wars in other countries that create more enemy's for the people of this country. Wars that only benefit the rich and powerful. They dont go to war in my place, they go because they are paid to go, then they come back and complain when they get maimed tortured. Its like  walking on to an interstate and stepping in front of a car and getting hit. OMFG the car hit me. No shit! What did you think was going to happen. Its the same with soldiers getting shot and blown up. They come home and whine about a situation they put them selves in. Complain about a war they knew was bullshit to begin with. If i stick my leg in a sharks mouth knowing full well that fucker is going to bite it off then i have no reason to complain when he does.

I need to respect these people for their path?
Idiots empowering a corrupt government, helping it invade other countries, destroying cities, killing civilians in record numbers, stealing wealth and natural resources, setting up phony governments, driving the inhabitants in to poverty. Yea those are all quality's i should respect.

Ok, take everything out of context.  I simply meant that I understand from the point of view of someone whos more privileged it may seem like people only join the military to get away with murder.  To someone who doesnt need uncle sam at all they may not get why people do what we do.  Maybe they didnt realize how much better financially this is then waiting tables.  Its all just to be able to shoot people right?  No.. I'm not putting anyone down.  I know nearly everyone, rich, poor, hippie, metal head or whatever is going to disagree with me right now due to whats going on and thats fine..  But I'm not the president, I'm not a congressman, I dont make those descisions.

  I just do my job and get paid just like you.  All I wanted to get across is that most of us are just like you.  We want a good paying job, to be successful, to be secure and not to be a killer.  And again I dont have to agree with this war..and I dont.

I love the military. They are paying for my college 100% because my father did 20 years in the marine corps. Military benefits ftw.
