Trouble quitting cigarettes.
    #8692682 -

Lately I've noticed my dependence on nicotine increasing, and I too often just smoke cigarettes even though I know I don't want to and that I am harming my body and my health. I have been a smoker on and off for maybe 2-3 years, but more recently I have been smoking somewhere around 7-8 cigs a day. I am worried I am going to die from these damn cancer sticks and just wanted some insight on how to quit this very harmful addiction. Some info about myself: I am 20 years old, 150 lbs, 6 feet tall. Do you think if I quit now I could avoid any severe damage to my lungs and health? I'm pretty worried....

Cold Turkey is the only way. I smoked for 5 years and have quit for 7 months, the first couple weeks suck though.

Good Luck.

Cold turkey worked for me, first three days were hell, but after that it was pretty easy.  Your lungs should be able to easily repair any damage that was done if you quit.

I never truely quit till I quit cold turkey.

Just stop smoking! And if you have some suportive friends who can help you, the easier itll be.
Also consider finding new activities to do during those cigarette breaks you used to have.

If you quit now you should be fine. But the longer you wait to quit the harder it will be.

You need to convince yourself that smoking is disgusting and it grosses you out and there is nothing that turns you off more in the world then a lung full of tar and cancer.

Then go visit a chemotherapy lounge for an hour, you will never want to smoke another ciggarette ever again.  That's how I quit!

Just pay attention to the tricks you play on yourself to smoke. Addiction is evil; it makes you manipulate yourself.

Tricks I've played on myself while a smoker :

"It's too late to quit, the damage is done." This is the stupidest trick of all. It's never too late; you're just doing more damage with each smoke. 20 minutes after your last cigarette your lungs start to heal; quit smoking for a week and you will notice a definite improvement in breathing, cardiovascular functions, smell, taste...

"Cold turkey is too hard; I'll cut down gradually." This is just a way not to quit. Extremely few people manage to quit that way. I found that my appreciation of cigarettes was inversely proportional to the amount I smoked; so the more I cut down, the more I enjoyed my smokes, and, in a sense, the more I was hooked. Just quit.

"Just one more", "Just one more day", "Just one more pack", "Just one more week", "I'll quit after the weekend", and all such variations. These are pussy excuses. No explanations required.

Pick a date to quit, and stick to it.

And do what CherryBom said. You have to make yourself hate it first. If you're having trouble quitting, its because there is still some part of you that wants to smoke.

A little trick that worked for me: while I was still smoking, worrying about my health, and contemplating quitting, I started focusing as intently as I could on each drag I took off my cigarette and all the sensations that went along with it. I would concentrate on the way it made me feel, the way it made my lungs feel, the way my breath tasted afterwards, the way my hair and clothes smelled, instead of just mindlessly smoking like I had done for years.

It also helped that I had just started dating a non-smoker, which made me pretty self-conscious about my smoking in the first place. I eventually got to a point where I was almost gagging, trying to take a drag.

So I picked a date, quit cold turkey after smoking cigarettes for 10 years, and I've been cigarette smoke free for 3 years now!

The only way is cold turkey, like everyone else in this thread said.  I did it.  3 days, a laughable 72 hours and nicotine is completely out of your system...takes a bit of willpower, but it really is the only way, and it works.  If you relapse beyond 72 hours, that's just weakness no other way about it.  The physical addiction is gone at that point.

When you feel like a smoke again, check out this site and shock yourself out of the urge with all these stories of young people dying to tobacco related diseases. http://whyquit.com/

Shit is evil, and cancer is the lesser worry--cardiovascular disease is very serious and very real at any age of smoker.  I had to quit because of heart issues. (and I'm young)

Nothing will scare the daylights out of you like heart issues...then you find out they are self-induced?  Good god I shudder at the thought of sucking those things down (especially at $5 a day now).

Smoking is terrible get out while you are young.

Yep, cold turkey is the best way to quit. Also, keep a supply of hard candies and/or chewing gum handy to help with the oral cravings.

I just quit last month actually.

I've been smoking a pack a day for the last 7 years. I just went cold turkey. Surprisingly it wasn't the worst thing in the world. I felt shitty and was a little bitchy, but I got through it.
