1 in five people do not have herpes.

Unless you count cold sores and shit, but not genital herpes.

The CDC says different.  But something tells me that wont sway your opinion.

You're right about that.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 adults over the age of 12 have genital herpes.

er.... thats an estimate, and I think that just sounds strange, over the age of 12? Most people aren't having sex at 13.

Almost every statistic is an estimate.

Just because it says “over age 12” doesn’t mean that the proportions of infected 12 year olds is the same as the proportion of infected 25 year olds, or even 50 year olds for that matter.  That may simply represent the earliest case known, and yes, im sure someone has caught the herp at age 12, but that’s not to say 1 in 5 children of age 12 carry the virus.

Any medical data extrapolated over an entire population is an estimate.  Any mass population statistic, in any form, from any source is an estimate. So if it is the idea of estimation that gives you doubt, than you are outright denying any population statistic ever made by any source because they are all estimates.

So is it the idea of estimation that makes you doubtful?  Or is it your view of the CDC’s credibility.  I’m interested to know.

definitely the estimation.

where are they getting that from, a small cross section of people is what it says.

The same with almost any survey of people.  It is prohibitively expensive to survey a large number of people and comparable results are able to be gleaned from a carefully selected subset of the population.

These people, I'm sure, are not picked willy-nilly.

There are many rules that must be followed in medical experimentation.

Every statistic similar to the one we are talking about, (stats that speak for a large population of people) start out as a study involving a "small cross section" of individuals.  That data is compared with other data from different "small crosssection" studies and so on...  The overall data is then extrapolated over the population that meets the same criteria of the "small crossection" of individuals selected for the study.

It’s impossible to get every last American over the age of 12 tested for herpes, aids, cancer, erectile dysfunction, or whatever.  The cost would be astronomical and it is not practical.  That’s why statistics are not conducted in that manner.

Exactly, if everyone included crucial information like correlation coefficients, detailed criteria, ect...  It would make it a lot easier to see how accurate the data actually is.  But then again, only some people would know how to interpret such things.

Which brings me to my earlier point.  This is why I gave you the two choices; any organization puts their credibility on the line with things like this.  So either you don’t like the idea of estimation (which means you don’t like the idea of statistics) or you think the CDC is not a credible source that simply provides *bad statistics.  Not all statistics are created equal, some organization have higher standards in terms of acceptable data, and correlation coefficients that constitute a credible extrapolation.

definitely, I would be willing to say they aren't credible due to that, although they are probably correct that it higher than we think it is, and that herpes is very often asymptomatic.
