I've posted in regards to this before, yes straw can be used to generate more straw spawn, but the problem isn't this. Straw contains VERY little if any nutrients, its mainly used to hold water. So if you decide to generate tons of spawn with straw, you will end up with mushies that are so weak you can't give them away. I highly suggest using 4 cups rye(or grain)(volume before cooking) for every sq. ft. of straw you do. If you choose to learn the hard way the suggest spawn rate is 1:10, although 1:5 will dramatically reduce possible contamination(anything more is neglible).

I've found cob to be pretty weak personally. I'd use grain spawn or just be like most people and use BRF cakes.

How about go to your local nursery (or home depot or whatever), and buy a big amount of compost. I've found compost to be very good for growing bulk. Its cheap, very cheap, and is a very good substrate (can be nuked for 10-20 minutes in the m/w, and no contams will occur, very reach in nutrients so it'll give of strong healthy shrooms). It is also quite natural as it is made out of shit.
If you want to go bulk this is the way!

Couple things to this, #1 trade_omlet, get a clue about compost, the shit they sell at Home Depot CAN work but most of the time it hasn't fully composted, and still requires pastuerization. When you "nuke it" you are actually destroying the beneficial microbials that make compost resist contamination(and grow huge shrooms). Yes you can nuke it and succesfully use it as a substrate, but its not like pastuerized compost that can be left out in open air and not contaminate. As far as your question goes teo, compost is more then just "fermented straw". Compost as you may or may not know contains EXTREMELY high concentrations raw foods for the mushrooms. Usually compost is made from a mixture of straw and manure, using just a combo of straw and manure(non-composted) pastuerized works too.

Well, ripper, since I dont live at the States and I've never been to a Home Depot, I wouldnt know what they are selling there.
You see, the compost im using is from a local nursery ( I live really far from the States), close to my house. Now, I usually nuke it for 8 minutes, than inoculate with spawn run. And well, sorry to tell you but it works like a charm.
About the "nuking". Its very much like pasturizing - It doesnt get very very hot like a pressure cooker, and if you put a glass of water inside the m/w while nuking the water vaporize and heat up, which creates a highly humid high temperature enviroment, so you see, ht beneficial microorganizms and shit in the compost are not destroyed.
Also, I think, though not sure, that m/w cant heat to more than a 100 degrees celsius, becuase it works on water (vibrates the water atoms very fast causing it to heat up).

Good theory, but, once you have seen paper burst into flames in a microwave, you'll probably forget about that theory. Cellulose burns at 451' Farenheit. You can't do that in a pressure cooker.

Also, I am not trying to be hyper-critical here Ripper, but you could cut Trade_Omlet a little slack here. Even if he is full of cholesterol (omlet thing :smile:), he doesn't need to "get a clue." A lot of commercial composts may suck, but he seems to be having good luck with his. I have spent more than enough time on this board cheerleading for the brand I found at Home Depot. (Just about ready to initiate pinning BTW.) I just don't think we should ever be hard on anyone for sharing information.

Convenience is nice, but, when composting is this easy, why pay someone else 10 times the price? :biggrin:

Straw is a decent substrate, just not great. If you are going to inoculate compost, you should inoculate with grain or a crumbled pf cake. Permagreen seems to be a decent brand, but may only be local to Colorado. The best compost would be that which you make yourself. Check the link in my last post.

Say someone abosutely had to innoculate compost with straw. Would the mushrooms be weak like ripper said or would the compost add nutrients and grow healthy mushrooms?

Ofcourse the mushrooms wont be weak. The compost will boost it up really good. The media of the spawn doesnt matter, because it is only a small percentage of the fruiting media, so dont worry.

Right you are, Omlet. As long as you have plenty of healthy mycelium to inoculate with, it doesn't matter what it is growing on. Lizard King reinforced this with his method of inoculating compost with nothing but pure mycelium. If you were going to have the compost outside, straw might actually be a good idea for the same reason Lizard King uses mycelium only. Bugs and slugs go after grain.
Psilly, if you have the colonized straw, use some of it to inoculate the compost and spread the rest out and case it. Experiment! :wink:

Forget about that crap they sell as compost at HD. To me it appears to be wood waste and plain old dirt, like somebody scraped it up off the side of the road. I found some much better stuff at a landscaping place. They have big ol piles of all kinds of shit.

I am sure that a lot of what HD has to offer is useless, but the Permagreen Mushroom Blend compost from the local HD is now forming primordia all across the casing layer of a 15"x20" tray. I would say that it is anything but worthless. :biggrin:

ok...just to let yall know ..i have no idea on how to form the myc.. and spawan and all that stuff..but i do have access to a large volume of cow and goat manure..anyone willing please help..thanks ALOT
