Re: Logic as a coping strategy [Re: Asante]

When logic become a refuge for the delusional, it tends to lose it's logic. Such people present rational sounding arguments, but use lots of subtle logical fallacies such as false dilemma, hasty generalizations, questionable cause, and appeals to authority. They themselves are blind to their errors as THEY feel firmly rooted in logic.

I guess I fear faith especially faith that uses bad logic, mostly because of
the spanish inquisition and the nazis and the faith empowered logic
of the WOMD rhetoric of gwb.

Seriously...

I'm sure his faith is strong, I just wonder where his heart is.  Or if it still beats.

I almost think he was set up as the fall guy, because of this.
He and his 'inner circle' have stirred quite an amount of SOMETHING.

Forgive me... I do generalize about human behavior sometimes.  If you are truly at peace with uncertainty in all its forms, I'd say you are an anomaly.  Congrats on the enlightenment.

I think logic is one tool, albeit a very important one, in our toolkit to understand the world.  However, sometimes we become a slave to logic and attempt to apply it in instances were it isn't the best tool.

Can you perhaps offer some examples with instances in which logic is not the best tool?

Why?  So you can dissect them logically to see if they make sense to you?  Talk about falling into a trap.

The analytic mind seeks structure, and sometimes, in its own way, safety from an abrasive and hostile world.  It can pare down things or events into a single category in order to make the world--in its interpretation--a more managable place.

In cases like these logic has not been applied properly. :hehehe:
We need to label things in order to make reality more accessible, and we need to find common ground in settling those labels so we can make ourselves understood and improve the quality of communication. Exaggerating, over-reacting and irrationally fitting things into categories is what's non-constructive, but if you have some basic knowledge about what logic stands for, you'll realize that those non-constructive ways have nothing to do with logics anyways.

As I gave no examples, you miscontrued my meaning.  Similarly, not only do you not seem to understand what I am talking about, I don't have any idea what you mean specifically either.

This tightening can result in a very small world and a very small worldview.  You can observe this best in persons who tend towards extremism.  Christians, Mystics, Skeptics and many other groups where common thought is shared can provide a safe harbor where the emphasis is not on learning, but being protected and safe.  It is their cocoon, so to speak.

Now this is a perfect example of irrational labeling, a labeling based on emotionalism, poor thinking skills and inertia. Exactly what's being successfully avoided when we correctly apply logic into our lives. It's so funny how you fell in your own trap.

I'm glad you are so easily amused.  If you read my post carefully, you would have seen the word 'can' between 'shared' and 'provide'.  Meaning that this is not always the case.  However, within extremism of all the listed types many examples can be found.

Never bring a knife to a gunfight.

This statement doesn't make any sense whatsoever. :nono:

"This statement doesn't make any sense to me" would have been more accurate.  Obviously, it had meaning or I wouldn't have written it.

The bulk of my post was deliberately vague so as to provide the necessary escape route for my getaway car.

Care to try again?

Choosing the best tool (or weapon) for the occasion can be the difficult part, as you almost never know what you are going to need until you need it....
Sometimes a Swiss Army knife can come in handy....

Many are proud that they don't believe what society teaches them, all the while failing to see they're defensivness is still something taught by society, of the thought pattern "i am my own person, no-one can teach me how to live" this is seen as logical as "i dont beleive anything unless it happens to me" which is also logical.

Yet this logical thinking is a trap as truth is outside of thought, all thoughts are traps (when concerned with truth) so all the cynics who profess to be intelligent and not taken in by religion etc..are JUST as conditioned as the religious fanatics, if anyone offended by this your just prooving my point

As I read your post it sorta made me think about a swiss army knife. I'm not sure if you were just trying to be funny about a swiss army knife coming in handy, but a swiss army knife would be perfect.

Think of your mind as a swiss army knife, where each piece of the knife is a representation of experience and lessons learned. The more you experience and learn, the better equipped you are

So what are you trying to say? Youre wrong if you think "black" and youre wrong if you think "white"? This whole statement is nothing more than your thoughts on what is true, you contradict yourself.

This is a tough topic because as human beings we are bound by what we perceive as logic. We are using this logic to interpret what other's mean when they post. I don't know, it's almost like a loop.
