Building your own guitar/bass?

I am about ready to dive into the world of instrument construction. I have done a lot of reading and study about this but I have never actually tried it yet. My father (who is an amazing crafstsman and has a full wood shop) has offered his time and services to help me. I am also pretty handy myself with all kinds of shit (including the electronics that will be involved).
I want to design and build my own matching set....an electric gutair and an electric bass. Something that will wow people when I pull them out on stage and start jamming.
Has anyone here ever tried such a project, or personally know someone who has? I would appreciate any tips on the subject. I am planning on using Koa wood from Hawaii (personal reasons there that need not be explained). I have connections to get the wood and I have plenty of resources to get the hardware and electronics. But if anyone has some helpful hints to make my project run smoother it would be appreciated.

Guitarmaking is very cool. Are you using Koa just for the body or for the neck and fingerboard too? My dad is also a craftsman and is very big on the hardwoods. We've got chunks of Koa, Zebrawood, Wenge, blackwood and all kinds of other grains lying around that I'd love to see in a guitar. One day I may make myself a guitar too. I'd really like to see your progress; post some pics once you start.
I tried to put a cool pic of a homemade guitar made of birds eye maple but the upload thing screwed up.
