Guitar Question for Tool fans
    #1745753 - 07/24/03 07:11 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Alright, for those of you who have the Lateralus album, you know the parts on Schism and Lateralus where the guitar makes that "whooshing" sound? What effect(s) is Adam Jones using on those parts?

wooshing.... there is a 'breakdown' part around 3:45 where the guitar is playing a riff, and the bass comes in with a sort of distorted echoed harmony thing. It sure doesn't sound like bass, but it is, i saw it live.
Justin has his left hand playing notes and his right hand on the volume knob.

Is this what you're talking about?

Yes, but there's also a similar effect on the song "Lateralus," which I'm pretty sure isn't bass, because you can also hear bass in the part.

no, i'm pretty sure everything they have on the album can be completely reproduced live. I've seen em 3 times on the lateralus tour and everything was played more than perfectly.
This means it's all done by the 4 piece band.

Tho, maynard does play guitar some songs live.

Try this link, it may help out http://www.gaspedal.com/choptool.htm .

Jones did say that he tries to use the same equipment live that he does in the studio, but I couldn't find any good diagrams of his effects set up or settings. I read somewhere that he uses an Ebow occasionally, which would be good for a sustained swooshy sound. You just gotta fiddle around with effects and approximate the sound. Good luck.

during the Triad guitar solo, he puts an Epilady(electric shaver) on the guitar strings to vibrate them while using a wah as well.. fuckin weird.

I am pretty sure about that anyways.

and i think your just hearing either a bass or guitar wah layered.

they do use MANY extra layers on their CDs to give it a whole new landscape of sound, only they do it so subtley that they can recreate it live and you wont know the difference.

put on some headphones and listen for all those faint electric guitar riffs whisking around in the background.

I thought, "Here's my job working on special effects for movies, and here's my hobby playing guitar." I met Maynard through a friend of mine that he was dating, and we became good friends. He played me a tape of a joke band he was in back on the East Coast, and I went, "Maynard, you sing good!" I kept bugging him to start a band on the side with me -- just for fun. Danny lived downstairs from Maynard, and he didn't want to play with us. Then we had a practice session, and the guy who was supposed to drum for us didn't show up. So Danny felt sorry for us, and agreed to play. He said, "Well, I'll sit in on the sessions, but that's it." And he sat in and went, "Wow, we should jam again." We started rehearsing a couple of times a week, and pretty soon Tool became an actual band.

You aint shittin', they might be the best LIVE band Ive seen in regards to how accurate the notes are...(live vs studio)

Im not sure I remember Maynard playing the guitar last tour.. Ive seen him with a bass in his hands twice though.

on one live recording they majorly fuck-up on 46&2, during the drum solo, danny starts going apeshit and I think he really confuses maynard who comes in singing like out of nowhere in the completely wrong place, but they pick it up like nothin... its hilarious though, the only real fuck up ive heard by them.

So far I only have 2 acoustics but a few friends and I are gonna do an acoustic set of tool songs at our open mic night soon. I think we are gonna start with h. cause that song sounds real tight. I play the guitar parts, we have an acoustic bass that my friend Tim plays, and our amazing percussionist Reya. She rocks at everything she does. I always thought h. would sound good acousticly and it does. I got the idea after hearing some acoustic APC. We may also do 46&2, some others. Also, go buy the Dillenger Escape Plan/Mike Patton collaboration. It is only 4 songs but it is amazing. They do a really heavy cover of Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin. Get it now.............
