Learning guitar or need to tune up your skills & knowledge?
    #3947354 - 03/21/05 04:11 AM (16 years, 8 months ago)

Three books I highly recommend:

Fretboard Logic SE by Bill Edwards
The Special Edition is the first two volumes of the Fretboard Logic guitar series combined with a special discount. Part One deals with the pattern organization of the fretboard which results from the guitar's unique tuning system. Part Two teaches the tone groups of music - Chords, Scales and Arpeggios - by building them in the context of this pattern organization, and thereby eliminating the usual guesswork and rote memorization associated with these areas of a guitarist's education. This alone can take years off the learning curve. Combined, the two parts form a solid foundation by which a guitarist can intelligently pursue the music styles of their own choosing, and play them on the guitar types which they prefer

Guitar Grimoire - Scales and Modes
The most complete book on scales and modes ever written. An encyclopedia with over 6,000 diagrams, charts and graphs. Complete explanation of all 5,6,7, and 8 tone scales and modes. The essential volume for every guitarist's library.

This book is a "where to" book, showing you exactly where to find any scale in any key on your fretboard. It is a professional reference tool to enhance your music library and playing that you will use for many years to come

Guitar Grimoire - Progressions & Improvisation
This long awaited volume is the most thoroughly exhaustive compendium of chord progressions ever published. Literally filled with hundreds of exercises and thousands of diagrams accompanied by Kadmon's unique presentation, ths book completely examines the craft and universe of progressions.

Improvisation and compositional technique are explained and interwoven to create a virtual encyclopedia of melodic and chordal possibilities, styles, dimensions and potentials.

I've tried to play some guitar before but I always struggle with finding the best way of getting started. Right now I have a pretty nice acoustic guitar but I'm more interested in the electric and bass sound. I listen to black/death metal mostly, so that style of playing would be ideal for me. I seem to be naturally good with the keyboard but I just don't like it as much as guitar.
Thanks for the info, I might have to check those books out.

Get an electric.  Acoustic is much tougher to play and you can't play death metal on it easily  :smirk:

I tried to learn by plunking away at an acoustic but didn't learn a damn thing until I picked up a Strat.  DO IT TODAY!

BTW Guitar Grimoire books are excellent.

it's a smart idea to take some lessons, especially in the beginning. things learned wrong are hard to 'unlearn' and will make progression at a certain point more difficult.

I'll have to check out those books. I recently got "Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar" by Troy Stetina, cause I want to work on my lead playing, but having a resource with more basic knowledge is a good idea.
