Not to media, but I add 5% to casing mix. I don't remember the exact place I read it, but it is supposed to enhance pinning in difficult species. I've done it for a couple years now. Can't say it does much, but it doesn't hurt.

I knew about adding it to the casing, but I also believe that chanterelle (sp?) growers use it and red yeast in their agar, otherwise the spores don't germinate on sterile media. So I was wondering if anyone tried this with any media, or has used it at all.

Anohter note..its suppose to be "active" charcoal. Stamets breifly talks about it in his books.

I think the deal is that somehow activated charcoal mimics the effects of benneficial bacteria. In casings it is similar in effect to the enhanced primordia production caused by thriving colonies of putida (maybe sp?) bacteria. Therefore, species that don't do well invitro also think that there are benneficial bacteria in the agar or media they are grown in. I don't think this line of though really applies to any of the psychedelic varieties, aside from the casing aspect, which cubes seem to do fine on their own. Perhaps try it on some pans and see if that helps.

So, Doktor, no real evidence that it helps your casings?

Accordding with stamets bookNacho activated charcoal produces similar effect than pseudomona putida.. a bacteria that makes the pinheads appears earlir and in better quantities...also it can be added to the spore water solution to germinate spores easily... older spore prints may benefit of it...
