No pretending is necessary. Women actually do like nice guys, but they dislike uninteresting guys a lot more, to the point where they would rather be with an asshole that holds some interest, than a nice guy who never says anything.
Nice is okay, but quiet is a problem.
Quiet people are afraid. Deny it if you want, but it is the truth. I used to be this way. I was afraid to say anything because I was afraid of how I would be perceived. What a fucking waste of time. And I looked at other (romantically successful) guys with disdain. I convinced myself they were all in the wrong, they were liars and manipulators, and spiky haired douchebags, but I WAS WRONG. It was me with the problem. I was afraid of looking bad or awkward or wrong.
Quiet people are not interesting. Now before you scream "Hey I'm really interesting once you get to know me!" realize that no woman is going to get to know you because she has not seen anything about you that is interesting. Interesting qualities have to be apparent.
You have to speak up, and of course it will not seem natural at first. You have to apply that little bit of pressure it takes to say more than the minimum, ALWAYS. It pays immense dividends. You'll realize that you are actually being MORE yourself when you are speaking up. Say anything, say stuff other people say. Just BE A PRESENCE, not a wallflower.
