cacti can grow inside without much light... But it does help a lot so what you got sounds good. Cacti can get sunburn so be careful!

What's the wattage on the T5's? High output or not? If they're HO, where'd you get them? I want some for an aquarium.

You can definitely grow seedlings under those lights, but be careful not to let them get burnt. You can make a shade out of a screen, or there's probably a better method.

Yeah, I always look at the cacti when I go to Wal-Mart lol. Poor light and they are dry as a bone. The ame poor cacti set there forever in that shape and look happy as hell. All of my button and small cacti are prob about 6 ft from the window and only get straight sunlight for about 3 hrs. They do great!

Well they will definitely get burnt outside.  Even the large cacti don’t do well unless they are in the shade.  Sadly, I don’t really have a suitable spot for my cacti outside right now so indoors is the best I can do for now.

Gumby,

These are standard Philips brand bulbs that you buy at Home Depot I don’t know the wattage (32?) but I have seen 54w bulb at local hydroponics shops.  A little pricey though.

Ok, so ill throw in a 2700K, and a 6500K into the ballast and see where it takes me.

How far away should the light be from the cacti?  Hours of light per day?

Are there any teks for seeding cacti?  What’s the best tek for someone with a black thumb?  For some reason the fungi gives me more love than the greens do.

In fact my last San Pedro, well, I better not say…

Morning sun is fine for all of them. They (Trich) do fine on my front porch, but by 10:30am they are in the shade.

I have yet to get a seedling to sprout. I had no luck after 3 months so I gave up on them. But luckily I was blessed with another batch of seeds  I just started the new batch a week or so ago so they have time.I put original batch outside to see what happens. I think my problem is lighting. I am using a full spectrum bulb but its nothing fancy... Is there any kind of growing bulb which I can put into an average desktop light?

Isn't it usually a sterillity issue before it is a light issue?

i start my seedlings under 2 CFLS only 18 watts each...i used to use 2 24" T8 tubes, but i like cfl better.....in short your lighting is fine for starting seedlings, but in the long run will need more light or they will be skinny.

t5s put out a LOT of light, about 5k lumens per 4 ft tube... i thinks hes well set lol, my bridgesii seedlings are doing fine under 3 t12's

u just have to worry about too much light but m not sure it would be as much of a problem with flouros

good reading there.

BASICALLY plants' chlorophyl absorbs in the 400-450Nm and the 650-700Nm range (seems to vary as to species, as other sites that tested otehr plants have slightly different results...); which is, in even more BASIC terms, blue lights (daylight 6200-6500K) and red (cool white type bulbs 2700K). very very rough numbers, but it will be good enough for your plants.

also look at this chart i got a long time ago from a lighting store. these are philips lights.

and some black light info

more info in my photobucket if you wanna read.
