Growing Morning Glory indoors?
    #1379576 - 03/16/03 01:29 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Hello everyone...
I recently collected some seed pods from a flowering Ipomoea Violacea plant (purple morning glory)....now the pods are dry and the seeds are hardened...but it is getting into winter in this part of the world now...
If I planted one of the seeds in a pot and left it on my windowsill (maybe only 1 hour of direct sunlight per day, the rest is diffused) would it theoretically grow okay, or would it be very lanky / unhealthy? I could maybe suppliment its growth with some fluorescent light bulbs too...I just like having plants in my room with me especially over winter, and I would love to have a morning glory climbling around my window edge! My plan was that I could grow it to a good size over winter and then when it gets warm enough in spring I will put it outside so that it has had a really big head start!
Also, is there any special technique for germinating morning glory seeds?

Well then it's worth a shot...I have about 10 seeds so I guess it won't hurt to use a couple for this experiment...*starts soaking seeds*...I'll let you guys know how it works out.

They need full, direct sun all day, every day. They will not grow well indoors.

HBWR is a shade loving plant. Even though it is tropical, it doesn't like direct sun. Morning Glories need direct sun at least 12 hours a day.

Do you know from personal experience, because I've had some MGs growing indoors for months. Just in front of a window recieving about 4 hours of direct sunlight a day and they grew healthy and fine. A little slow perhaps, but they grew.

I always start my MG's indoors in peat pods and stick them in the window for a few weeks before I put them outside in Mid April, they will grow several inches that way. If you want any real growth though, and especially if you want them to produce seeds, they will have to get far more light. I tried to grow them on the exposed brick wall in my kitchen a few years ago where it is full Southern exposure and sunlight all day, it wasn't nearly enough for any decent growth.

Besides, MG's are climbing vines, even if you did get enough light on your window sill, you would have to put a trellis up on your window, It would be completely covered by June, blocking out all light from your window.

I'll try those then! Any idea if they need high humidity? because my room is very dry...
