Can't cope with sobriety
    #8320199 -

Welp, I'd like to start by saying I have a very addictive personality.

I have been smoking weed daily for the past 4 years. I recently quit (4/20 last day). Now, I haven't had a problem with wanting to smoke for the sake(sp?) of smoking. But I am not accustomed to being sober at night and I'm not quite sure what to do.

I don't want to turn to pills, naturally (see opening statement). I am a lightweight when it comes to alcohol (6pack = drunk), but I'd like to avoid that addiction aswell.

Essentially what I'm asking is what the hell I should do to occupy myself. I live the typically-uninteresting life of a semi-reclusive college student. I'm broke, so going out isn't an option. Finals are coming up, so studying is available - but one can only take so much of that. Chess & the Shroomery have been keeping me semi-entertained, but it's not to the extent necessary. Also - I exercise in the morning, so doing it again at night isn't an option.

Any ideas? What natural ways are there to mellow out? I am a typical over-achiever and constantly doing things all day gets me worked up. Nothing compares to a nice bowl and mindless TV after a work-intensive day.

What can I replace my love for weed with?

Thanks in advance
-meams

Reading , painting , music , meditation , martial arts. Really , any hobby that you enjoy can replace drugs. I'd say just try out a couple of activities you find might interest you. Sure , some of them may not be as fun as you expected them to be, but the possibilities are endless.

Hope this gives you the drive to pursue other activities !

You have two choices.

You're right about turning to pills & alcohol being a BAD decision. Think about it from a step back for a second. SOME may argue that both those things are far more unhealthy than smoking a joint, and I would AGREE.

Give it some time, soon being sober becomes natural when before being high was natural. It's a big adjustment. In my experience of taking frequent breaks to clear my head, after two weeks, the depression and restlessness subside. Moral of the story: be patient.

While getting blackout hammered is a bad move, going out for a few beers and socializing will help the adjustment. Relax and try to have a good time. You don't NEED the pot in order to do that.

Welp, after pacing around my appartment for 30 minutes and starting 3 different books, I gave in and chased a klonopin with 2 beers.  It was just what I needed.  Helped me mellow out and now I can sleep.

I think I'm going to move my workouts to the evening instead of morning - so I'm exhausted by the time i'm done.  Apart from that, started a John Grisham book, and he always has the ability to keep me enthralled.

Thanks for the good ideas thus far, keep 'em coming

I don't know, it seems that a large percentage of people have a crutch of some sort, including me for most of my adult life. I think it's a very human thing to have an "unwind" helper of some sort, but I too struggle with the fact that my heart tells me that it's not right to be dependent on anything to either get you going or calm you down. It's a tough call.

I would never recommend drug use, but if a little weed helps you wind down and has never been a problem or gotten in the way of anything in your life, why try to fix what isn't broken??

This world is enough to drive anyone mad, and while the perfectly pure life is probably the best route, the key word is probably.

You get used to sobriety. When you have been smoking that long it takes awhile to adjust. I had the same problem. But remember you weren't born high and you spent the first portion of your life totally sober and i bet still had lots of fun. After awhile being sober is normal and easy.

Yeah, I want to make sure that I state I am fully in favor of a sober life. But I'm not one to preach on what I myself struggle with.

Meams, just zip around youtube.
If my mind is wandering or if I don't know what to do with myself, I love to find a new Terence Mckenna video. He will really hold your interest (because he was a genius and the fuckin man) and once it becomes too much, my brain is already slowing down and I'm getting tired and ready for bed.

I was going to say the same thing. I quit pot myself and it's been almost a month. The first week or so, I felt restless and undirected, but now I've evened out and have been enjoying sobriety.

Give it some time, and good luck.

I have to quit for the summer's activities. In a few weeks i'm heading to DC to intern & take classes @ georgetown. While I'm not 100% positive the internship will drug test (it's pretty likely they will), I'll be interning 9-5 every day and taking classes from 6-9. Plus random activities and events scheduled by the program that I enrolled in to gain access to all this (www.dcinternships.org).

I'll definitely need my head & body clear in order to surirve in such an intense environment

Like someone else said: reading, physical exercise, meditation, making music... anything but killing time.

Hell, start a website, write a book, volunteer, sign up for community sports, learn a language just do something with lasting value.

If all you think about is getting high when you do these things, then you have a drug problem.

I agree with Whiskey. It's real easy for these things to sneak up on you. I'm glad your taking it on. Personally, over the past few years I have become VERY attached to wine and then the occasional hand crafted micro brew (Colorado...the napa valley of beers : ) and I realized that even though I could control the amount I was taking in, I sure did it a lot. I've been working on it since last December, and it's a lot harder to abstain completely than I ever thought.

I don't get drunk per se', but I can tell by how much I think about it, desire it, and want it that I either had an issue, or it was going to become one.

I guess the hard question is, if you know that it's good to stop, once you get off and in the clear, should you stop forever??

Good luck man!!

You just have to wait it out. Soon it will be normal for you not to smoke or do anything at night. Be patient, don't worry. Just suffer through it for another week or so and you'll start to think about it less and less as time goes by. It takes time but you'll start to see you don't think about it as much and that'll be an indicator that you're starting to move past it. Good luck.

That's been my question of the day. So far today has been great. I've gotten extreme amounts of schoolwork done - long before i needed to even start on 'em. I've seen (to speak in my natural economic tongue) productivity gains increasing at an increasing rate as the days go by.

However, once August 3rd comes around (my DC experience ends Aug 2nd), I'll have the option to start up my MJ use again. I would love to have it be a recreational thing, once a week or so - and obviously the spacing of use would increase my enjoyment of each session - but I'm not sure I have the self control to enjoy something so glorious at such sparatic intervals.

I suppose that's just something I'll need to re-ask myself once August comes around. But for now - I'm really loving the productivity gains, and am TRULY thankful for all the support from you all, as well as my IRL friends (who are still stoners).

I'm not quite sure what to make of the whole situation yet. I've been filling a lot of my free time with schoolwork, and cardio. Also decided to take on the goal of attaining a 6-pack, only because it was something i strived for very hard back in highschool and never quite achieved.

I forsee keeping this post going throughout the next week or two as somewhat of a journal to my experience, as I'm sure I'll have to either a)quit again in the future, or b)put it to use on others (my IRL friends, or shroomerites, or random strangers).

It's definitely been a journey thus far, and I'm glad you all are along for the ride.

Final note: the presence of dreams has really thrown me through a loop. I haven't had them in 4 years, and now that they're back - it's quite a mindfuck. I took a nap today and had three dreams. WTF? It may sound retarded to you all but it's truly mind-boggling to me

No, not at all. I've given the herb up several times in my life (hopefully for good here 6 months ago) and I cannot state how vivid and real my dreams were those first few weeks. I've had the same experience with not drinking, although it hasn't been quite as pronounced.

There can be no doubt that intoxicants mess your sleep patterns, and all the amazing health benefits of a good night's sleep up. Part of the price you pay I guess.

Good luck on that 6 Pack.

Nope. This semester (before it started) was showing to be exremely taxing on my time, so I quit my valet job last december with enough in reserves to last for a while (most of my living expenses are still covered by my parents - save the shittalking).

The end result I was looking for was met - my grades are phenominal and I acquired my first internship for this summer (the whole DC thing), plus managed to get to take some classes at Georgetown this summer as part of the package.

Once i return this fall I plan on getting a part time job somewhere, just to have some cash on hand while I secure a "real" job for post-graduation (Graduate Dec '08)

Tonight will mark the one-week mark.

I almost caved in last night due to a unprecedented amount of bullshit drama at my friends 23rd birthday party, but I held strong.

It's not really an issue anymore - i barely think about it.

Thanks again shroomery
