but seriously guys, does anyone have any tips for acheiving somatic fusion; and or getting monokaryons to mate from different species, but the same genus?

p. azurescen x p. tropicalis would be cool

specially if it could be easily cultivated indoors.

I think RR said it would take many attempts and it would be costly for genetics testing and you would spend years doing agar work and you need to use snake venom to help dna transfer information.

Yeah, personally I doubt psilocybe and pans can mate. Unfortunately :frown:

Isn't it possible to cross cubensis with azurescens via somatic fusion?

we have to remember here that these species aren't light years away in terms of genetics - they are both fungi; and ulthough azurescens is a primary decomposer and a wood lover, cubensis is also a primary decomposer. Both will grow well on rye grain. Haven't you ever seen apples crossed with pears? two VERY distinct fruits which gave rise to a third fruit which is both profitable and enjoyable. (called a chinese apple; very nice indeed.)

What does anyone know about rattlesnake venom for somatic fusion? Or other methods?

Thanks,

Thomas

Fungi share more genetics with humans than with plants.

It's called a chinese pear or asian pear actually.

every couple of month a few guys that think that they are bright when it comes to the subject of genetics and they start talking about the possibility of making a hybrid. This has been talked about for as long as I have been here and my reference to Mr g and foggy mountain farms is based on a true story. I have talked to this so called mr g but the dude is a wack. He supposedly had cancer or something and died but it is the interent and that part of the story could have been bullshit just like the az/cube hybrid. We all know that the b+ is not a hybrid
Its funny how over time it changes to the amazon strain but it was originally the b+. If it could be done for a realistic amount of $$ than it would have been done already. It is no where near a new pioneering idea. Its been a pipe dream for years

In my opinion the reason why no such hybrids have appeared yet is more or less the lack of knowledge, men gathered about mushrooms yet.
This lack of knowledge originates from the yet not accredited potential mushrooms inhibit.
As soon as someone finds out how to make A LOT of money with mushrooms, the scientific world will focus on them a lot more, leading us to probably amazing results you can achieve with this kind of organisms.
For thousands of years, plants have been investigated and researched, which is one reason why it's possible to manipulate their genetics comparatively easy.

I wouldn't say mushrooms are any harder to deal with than plants; it's just that yet not much efforts were made to make it any easier.

I have a personal opinion as well!

We all need to remember that our mycological classification system is based on characteristics viewed from the eye and under the microscope. Most mushroom species are not even DNA fingerprinted yet. Until this is done I would recommend sticking to thinking that this is entirely possible on the molecular level. Matings though physical crosses of different species of psilocybe mushrooms has been tried. I really doubt that those like Paul Stamets and the such have not attempted this with these two species. If it could happen I think we would know. I do however think that not every cross possible has not been attempted and the possibility is still there as we discover new species every day.

Yes! The two are of the genus psilocybe. Yes they have psilocybin and psilocin in common. YES! The physical characteristics are slightly different. Are there other genus with these similarities? YES! Could one day these be classified into a different genus. YES! It has happened many times with some species. Could the DNA be very close together, enough to exchange some information with each other with a little help? Very possible!!

I float in the same boat as those here that say "If you have not tried it and want to sit here and say it is not possible, you are trying to place a road block in our development of knowledge we strive for every day". Shame on you to say such things in such a very young field of science!

I am sure it could be done. I just don't know the how. Try asking on mycotopia as well.

asking RR wouldn't be a bad place to start

He made PE-6 which is a Penis Envy and Texas cross

He also revived 20 year old spores - Redboy which are partially Puerto Rican.

I'm pretty sure, -although he's a respectable and and admirable mycologist with lot's of experience- RR also has no master-plan for these kind of genetic creations.
It's one thing to do a crossbred of two phenotypes of the same species, but another to cross two species (although from the same genus).
Although it shouldn't be this hard to achieve such things, you first have to know what you're dealing with and as I and many other people said before, mushrooms are quiet unknown yet.

I guess researching and parallel trying is the only way to figure out weather how hard or difficult it actually is.

Though I'm convinced it has been tried before...

I think it would be a pretty horrible investment to try to develope an azure/cube hybrid for sale in the mush cult community. invest thousands of dollars into research that will most likely fail. if it doesn't fail release the new hybrid for sale on a website, for the price of one print or syringe each online competitor will be selling the same product

Exactly. The lack of protection for a developer has severely reduced my incentive to put in the time and funds for such work. I've been burned a few too many times to even bother anymore.

f=king... THANKYOU. LOL!

I hate these naysayers! they're all content just to type 'nope, can't be done' thinking they're taking the easy way out - but its the people who aren't on the forums, they're in their kitchen, their growroom and their gloveboxes, pushing the boundaries.

P.S Nice post on DNA; I haden't thought about that. Tbh, we are all Eukaryotes and as such are decended from common ancestor. Your organelles would work in my cells, as would a chimpanzee's or even a bacterial plasmid, for that matter.

And as you quite rightly pointed out, these mushrooms were lumped into 'species' by humans. infact, even the very idea of having a species or genus (i.e compartmentalised) is infact a very human trait. It is not such in nature; which is a constantly evolving, stretching, morphing, mutating thing. An ancestor mushroom common to both psilocybe azur, cyans, cubensis, etc etc must have existed, at some point.

P.S I am not really that interested in personal gain from sale of spores - ulthough I can think of a buisness model that wouldn't allow online vendors half a chance.

What I meant was these would be extremely valuable in terms of a cultivated mushroom species. More potent than cubensis, yet quicker growing than azurescens. Substrate would probably be straw or other cellulose waste I would immagine.

nice liger btw yrat; seen them before. the hybridization brings out somekind of disinhibition of growth hormone; and hence a liger is fookin' huge. - bigger than EITHER of its parents.
