Azurescens/Cubensis Hybrid
    #8178963 -

How far would a hybrid mating go? for example, could a slow growing wood loving primary decomposer mushroom such as azurescens mate with a primary and secondary quick growing coprophore such as cubensis?

If this is possible the resulting hybrid would be extremely valuable. The reason I ask is fairly obvious.

I think the mushroom society as a whole really need to get more involved with genetics. The cannabis community is far, far further ahead with such endevours. (Gibberellic acid, feminized seeds, back crossing, more strains than you could shake a stick at, etc)

Infact, in addition to this (because I am going to try; using the good old monokaryon fusion method)

does anyone know what the fastest growing/prolific fruiting edible mushroom species (that I can get hold of) is?

Thanks,

Thomas

its been done many years ago by a guy at foggy mountain farms named Mr G. He made a cube/azure hybrid and its now called a b+

My guess would be a Pleurotus spp. , Perhaps Pleurotus ostreatus.

I would concur. This is the most aggressive mycelium that I have ever seen

I think your comparison to the hemp market is unfair. You are talking about mating distinct species with different food sources, not simply mating two plants so similar their taxonomy as separate species is questionable.

Mating Psilocybe cubensis with a Pleurotus would be one of the largest developments in taxonomy and genetic engineering this century. They are members of different families and play vastly different ecological roles. Oyster mushrooms are primary decomposers of lignin, P. cubensis is a tertiary decomposer and (consequently) I assume with different enzymatic potential

EDIT: I' dalso like to add that, though Tahoe said P. azure and P. cubensis have been bred together (making B+), it is an inside joke within the online mushroom community (OMC) at the expense of the people who sold B+ as the mentioned hybrid.

Who knows, maybe it is possible to mate P. cubensis and P. cyanescens or P. azurescens, though my training as an ecologist with a concentration in mycology suggests this is extremely improbable if not impossible.

The comparison to mj is faulty.

Crossing a cubensis with an azure would be like crossing mj with an apple tree.

What about something more along the lines of crossing Azurescens with a faster growing member of the same family.

Along those lines what about crossing Pan Cyans with a related edible that is more hardy then pan Cyan alone.

I think this is the right idea but it needs to be looked at on a more realistic level.

I am sure some of this could be done with current methods. On a side note maybe the next step for us is Bio Hacking. Take a look at this....

I guess what you are missing here is, every time you use a spore syringe you effectively do the same thing as creating the first generation of a new hemp strain. You are still talking about what is analogous to, as RR put it, mating Cannabis with Apples

Based on modern taxonomic principles, what you are suggesting is easier imagined in trying to make offspring from mating a human with a Jaguar

Isn't it possible to cross cubensis with azurescens via somatic fusion?

we have to remember here that these species aren't light years away in terms of genetics - they are both fungi; and ulthough azurescens is a primary decomposer and a wood lover, cubensis is also a primary decomposer. Both will grow well on rye grain. Haven't you ever seen apples crossed with pears? two VERY distinct fruits which gave rise to a third fruit which is both profitable and enjoyable. (called a chinese apple; very nice indeed.)

What does anyone know about rattlesnake venom for somatic fusion? Or other methods?

Thanks,

Thomas

Yes, I agree each MS inoculation is like starting from seed.

However I disagree - your limited knowledge of species, kingdom and genus is apparent:

Humans: Homo Sapiens.
Jaguars: Felis onca.

Azurs: Psilocybe Azurescens.
Cubensis: Psilocybe Cubensis.

So no, its nothing like mating a human and a jaguar. Its more like mating a neandertal and a homo erectus. Which btw, PROBABLY happened, and now we have a new species: Homo Sapiens.

Joesmithjoe:

Thanks for the video. Yeah, I have often dreamed about taking the psilocybin gene out of mushrooms and putting it into some e. coli or something, then brewing an entire liquid vat of 3 - 4% psilocybin and psilocin solution. Lovely. heheh.

Proably would splice it into a plasmid with enzymes, either that or use a phage.

You may want to start with mushrooms that are within the same section.

That was in reference to the idea of mating cubensis and oyster mushrooms

p. azurescen x p. tropicalis would be cool

specially if it could be easily cultivated indoors.

I think RR said it would take many attempts and it would be costly for genetics testing and you would spend years doing agar work and you need to use snake venom to help dna transfer information.

Yeah I really doubt B+ shows any characteristics of azurescens - imho its 100% cubensis, if a rather large fruit producing veriety.

Yeah, personally I doubt psilocybe and pans can mate. Unfortunately :frown:
