For the sceptics...
    #8197612 -

Everyone here talks about ego,

"your so egotistical to think that"

"to think you are the universe is so egotistical"
(thats the worse one because to know the universe the 1st thing you have to do is transcend ego lol!)

How can anyone who has not transcended ego call someone egotistical?

The very statement "your so egotistical" implies being able to have no or little ego?

If these sceptics had gone anywhere beyond egotistical then they would not be sceptics lol

So to sceptics i ask what is a person if they have little ego? Are you that? If not then what gives you the right to call someone egotistical?

:peace::heart:

In regards to that I think you can look at it from two perspectives. One, I do believe that I am the universe, but because of that I believe I am everyone else. So from this perspective how can I be better or worse than anyone else? I am the exact same thing. In my opinion there is nothing egotistical about that.

On the other hand to think you are the center of the universe could imply that nothing is more important than you. That I would say is certainly egotistical which seems to be the perspective you are asking this from.

Quote:
For these sceptics that use the word ego yet seem to believe of nothing beyond ego...why do you use the word ego?

I believe there is nothing before the ego either . You can't have a non ego without an ego. They are the same thing.

Having an 'ego' is healthy, as long as it is the servant, not the master. Being egotistical means indulging in a sense of self derived from feeling one is better than others. That, to me, is the difference.

it is definately not in the i am the centre of the universe sense, that is just preposterous for someone to think that.

It is in the sense this piece of dirt under my foot is of the same exact value as i am. Realising the universe there is no ego involved, the ego is the very thing that believes itself to be separate and keeps you from realisation of being the universe.

Well there is no point in being human. The only thing humans are supposed to do is be born and die. We all do that just fine. Anything else you choose to do doesn't make you better at being a person, it just makes you a different person.

The Buddha was a skeptic. Skepticism is extremely healthy when timed right, just like anything else.

When you divide yourself off from skepticism, then your ego is saying you are not a skeptic. Right now, I'm skeptical of the fact that you are never skeptical about some things at some times.

Ah yes, judging skeptics...

I fail to see the difference between a skeptic that has never transcended egoloss and a non-skeptic that has transcended egoloss, but has returned to the realm of duality.

If you are not the path, then you are egotistical; there is no in-between. Be wary of the ego inflating its sense of worth after having experienced something 'special'.

Werd. Its easy to feel like damn im sepcial after being catapultyed across the universe, but then you realise there was no person being catapulted, this "I" was long dead before i transcended this "I"

Im just asking them (skeptics) what would they percieve sumone having little ego as being like as a person?

And are they themselves like this?

If not then what gives them the right to call someone egotistical?

Thats all...

In the end someone who has little ego would never call someone "else" egotistical, as they don't see "others" they see "us"....its that simple.

The term is far too ambiguous, and, far too often, it is never clearly defined. The term is almost as dirty as g*d. In fact, from here on out, I think I'll refer to it as "eg*".

I just think it is gay how, over and over again, these discussions arise in which people think the eg* topic is some dilemma to be explored and figured out. Rarely have I seen the meaning associated with the term eg* have any real reflection of the nature of reality itself. Just today I was reading a thread in which someone was referring to destroying the eg*. Its just nonsensical gibberish. :cuckoo:

Re: For the sceptics... [Re: fireworks_god]

I can explain it (in a way that satisfies me).

There is form (body). Body is not "I" because body changes all the time. It is illogical to say my eye is me, or my arm is me, or my hair is me. Rather, it is possible to say these things are part of me, but they in and of themselves are not you.

There is feeling. Feelings change all the time. All feelings can be seen as pleasant/unpleasant. It is not logical to say, I am the feeling of happiness, because happiness rises and falls.

There is thought. We can't even control thought. Thought happens independently of our control and arise based on the conditions we create in our brains (which store memory and is considered part of body).

There is perception. This forum is a good example of how it is illogical to say I am my perception, because our perception of life changes all the time. Perception is based around the idea of a singular entity "self" and/or of impersonal experience.

There is consciousness. Goto sleep. No more consciousness.

All five of these things are present, and none of them are inherently us. Their rising and falling are ignored and we cling to them as if they are permanent and substantial. By doing this we create a "self." So it is important to discern their arising and passing, and to understand the process as it is.

That's one of the main reasons I can't take eg* discussion seriously; just like g*d discussion, everyone feels the need to accept the term as being valid and then creates their own meaning for it. I wish that, just once, people would just discard these words that have no real consensual meaning and represent the concepts they are seeking to express for what they are.

I see the purpose of philosophy as seeking to understand the nature of reality. This is a collaborative effort, and there is no reason to continue to propagate memes that are extremely inefficient in representing the nature of reality. The purpose of philosophy isn't to continuously redefine a word that is incapable of representing its own meaning. If there is any valid meaning that an individual is attempting to express through using the term eg*, it would be more expedient, for the sake of philosophy, to express it more effectively.

Ego transendence is just getting beyond the attachments of what you love & dont love and just loving everything unconditionally.

Someone who has a low level of ego will have eyes full of compassion and love for all beings as it is only our selfishness that keeps us from doing this, the ego is selfishness, the perception we are separate from everyhting else.

Having a bit of ego is beautiful, love your individuality, every second of it, yet don't hold this to be reality as it is false, this is why we suffer so much we are denying our true nature, which is to love.

To temporarily suspend the "learned reality" does not mean ego death in my book. Ego death is just hippie invented stuff, if you permanently (like some posters suggested here that it's good to do) remove the learned reality (is there any other reality BTW? :sherlock:) means zero brain activity which means that we're unable to operate in any way.

No, actually this is also your personal interpretation, one that doesn't have anything to do with what it actually means.
I made that reference because backfromthedead showed a specific graphic that was about the psychological definition of the ego. However, this is not the ONLY definition, hence the confusion it produces.

Quote:
Ego transendence is just getting beyond the attachments of what you love & dont love and just loving everything unconditionally.

You're just talking from books here.
Or are you trying to imply that you managed to permanently "transcend your ego" and you're talking from a place where you already know all that?
From what I have observed, people tend to give all the negative attributes to the "ego", making it look like some sort of evil twin. This all sounds to me like a way of justifying one's failures.

Quote:

'He(Freud) thought of the ego as synonymous with consciousness and contrasted it with the repressed unconscious.'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ego_psychology

I say that it is very possible to transcend ego while remaining conscious/aware to experience this 'repressed unconscious'.
If you think of it like in the image, it is only a part/one orbit of the whole considering consciousness/unconsciouness.

The way it feels to me is that when you ingest large amounts of psilocybin, it's action as a serotonin analogue lights up your neurons like a Christmas tree. The 'inspired' activity easily eclipses the action and intensity of the few networks used on a daily basis. Perhaps.

Not really, it takes an ego to know and ego. There is no implication of no ego there. But we are all egotistical and self-important. Some of us just can't see it is all.

I think of myself as having a gigantic "ego," inasmuch as I think A LOT about what other people are thinking, particularly what they are thinking about me, and I react accordingly on a constant basis.

Did I just describe myself or absolutely everyone present?

Someone who has a low level of ego will have eyes full of compassion and love for all beings as it is only our selfishness that keeps us from doing this, the ego is selfishness, the perception we are separate from everyhting else.

This definition of "ego" does not match any version of what the REST of us have agreed upon. If you want to discuss negative qualities of the ego (personality), then you may bring up selfishness, divisiveness, lack of empathy, etc...

Being loving, compassionate & viewing the universe as "all one" are ALL expressions of the ego (personality). To attempt to define these positive qualities as arising from something other than who you are is absurd.

We all may choose what the expression of our ego looks like...and it is as flexible or rigid as our thinking about ourselves. It seems to me that you may be circling around the idea that developing a flexible, positively-inclined ego construct would be beneficial for humankind. If so, I agree 100%.

If, however, you are claiming that one can "reduce" or "kill" or "eliminate" the ego, I must disagree vehemently. As long as we are alive, and not in a permanent vegetative state, we WILL have a personality. The expression of our consciousness WILL continue, for better or for worse, until death intervenes. Some of us will express our memories and our interpretations of current experiences via so-called "selfishness," some of us will do so through so-called "selfless" service to others. Both expressions are EGOIC.

No, you are the individual who introduced the term in this thread, and the phrase "eg* transcendence". You can't say you are using the phrase "eg* transcendence" because one of us asked you what you meant in your usage of the phrase. One of us didn't ask you before you used it.

You are SO stuck in linear time...

Yes, its just that to you, but everyone has their own pet definition.

Everyone has their own unique definition for every word, some are just easier to relate than others. I think for the most part it seems we all agree what the ego is and what it's functions are. It's hard to describe an ego so it seems more loose of a definition than most, and it is certainly hard to grasp unless you've experienced some form of ego loss. Have you by the way? I can't see why you'd be arguing so intently if so.

'...consciousness is of its own properties, transcendental as there is inclusive in it, itself and reflection of it.'

'...the material presence of things in turn proves the ontology of the object contemplating them. Ego is then nothing without something in which to contemplate but is reliant on itself and its being. Further, the flexibility of consciousness for Sartre is the ability to contemplate something in its absence, this being special for his idea of reflection.'

'In this way we are still only condemned to making ourselves as we battle with our own consciousness, and so we don’t create the world, we are objects in the world.'

This is probably due to the fact that they are closely related.

Clearly. Some words share little consensual meaning, whereas words like "everyone", "has", "their", "own", etc. have established significant, consensual meaning.

This is quite the unsubstantiated statement. Any discussion of the eg* is complete with quite the varied conceptions of what the word refers to. By all means, enlighten us as to which definition of the word eg*it seems we all agree on, for the most part.

I never denied that definitions of ego vary. I was just saying we all generally agree what it means. There are certain things we (most people I've talked to) can agree that the ego does. It gives you your sense of self, keeps you from being 'connected' with the outside world etc.

You seem to act like ego has absolutely no meaning. Am I wrong on this? There are certain things an ego is generally considered to entail, and certain things it does not. While there is no single definition everyone can entirely agree on, can you deny that there are general notions attributed to the ego?

I don't see why this is related but I believe that everyones definition of god is in fact the same regardless of what religion you are but people do not realize this (because of their ego ). To me god literally means everything and/or nothing. That is the best I can express it's meaning in words.

Are you saying he would reply to me that way? Cause I agree completely. How is that in opposition of my points?
