sound is vibrations. When the tree falls its gives of vibrations, therefore it gives off sound.

The questions never asks if anyone heard/witnessed the sound, but if it produced a sound.

I believe that is what i said. Regardless if something hears it, the vibrations from the fall create "sound"

LOL, sorry I'm nodding pretty bad on vicodin. But then again never blame your faults on drugs.

Please daytripper bless me with your quoting knowledge

Cracka, should we assume that this is the original question or were you just trying to confuse us?

hehe, so even with that minor tid bit left out, the tree still makes vibrations/sound.

My whole argument is based on a discrepancy between "sound" and sound. Take a look.

But no, I am in sincere admiration of your quotage, especially if it was a drug addled accident.

Is there a reason you guys feel the need to keep writing sound as "sound" or "vibration/sound?" Why not just go all the way and call it variable X?

 are you serious dude?  Its not a variable, its a constant.  It has a definition, that definition is vibration.  Words have meaning, people agree on the meaning (most people).

If you want to discuss a question "If a tree falls no one is around does it make a variable x?", then thats a different topic.

The question implies that there is more to sound than what is objectively apparent. Otherwise, kind of a silly question eh?

I think the phrase aims to raise questions concerning what constitutes reality as we understand it. Does anything 'exist' in the absence of an observer to confirm its existence? How do our sensory inputs affect our interpretation of reality? Is a green ball still green without a human eye to register and categorize it as such? is a melon really sweet without taste buds? and does a tree make a sound without anything to hear it? I guess modern science takes away from the question, reducing it to more of an acoustics lesson, but I'm sure it carried much more significance when it was conceived

No I wasn't serious.

I was pointing out the absurdity of relying on the definition of sound, and then later using quotations or other means to make the concept ambiguous.

If you want to say there is an utterly objective concept of sound, don't call it "sound" or sound/vibration.

The tree produces vibrations in the air which were also called 'sound' by the definition above. This 'sound' can be perceived differently by different life forms, including humans.
A bat can hear totally different sounds as a pot whale, that's why I prefer talking about 'sound-waves' as that what is transmitted, and 'sound' as what is perceived.

Yes, animals and insects count as subjective points of reference. Sound as I interpreted the classic question doesn't mean the mere movement of air molecules, it means the entire experience of subject-object, and without some sentience whether animal, insectoid or mechanical, it is just the same as a grenade exploding in outer space - soundlessly.

Dictionary definitions can be expanded, just as vocabulary becomes expanded by colloquial speech becoming recognized and formalized. As a matter of fact, the example of this which is explained in the first pages of my 1979 Webster's Collegiate Dictionary singles out the term "acidhead!"
My definition of sound assumes that there is no completely 'objective' reality and that the word 'sound' implies reception by some subject, hence consciousness is included in the definition as in the experience of sound. This is not as simplistic as it appears. In the absence of some recording device or creature, only vibration exists, not the tympanic or electric instrument to complete the reality called sound.

'...only vibration exists, not the tympanic or electric instrument to complete the reality called sound.'

It is the vibration that we call 'sound' that is transduced by a microphone into electrical signals called 'audio'.
Measuring decibels electronically is a measurement of SPL (sound pressure level). The pressure is air pressure. Anything that produces vibration in air sends out waves (sound) in all directions whether there is an observer or not.
