I am currently conducting research on Amanita muscaria and A. pantherina and how their effects correlate with their preparation or form of ingestion.

As some of you may know, R. Gordon Wasson has made a convincing argument that A. muscaria is the divine Soma, as described in the Rig Veda. While Wasson’s theory is compelling on many levels it has been challenged on the basis that A. muscaria intoxication is just as likely to cause symptoms of nausea, pain and vomiting as it is to induce a religious experience in the consumer.

While there are many factors that may influence the potency or toxicity of this mushroom, such as strain, soil type, geographic location and time of year collected, my hope is to establish patterns of symptoms that correlate to type of preparation or ingestion, and thus bolster support for Wasson’s theory. I have created a survey that I am using to collect data on accidental and intentional poisonings with this unique mushroom, and am hoping to collect as many as possible. The more surveys I have the more accurate and useful the data will be. If you or anyone you know has experience with this mushroom and would like to assist in this study, please complete the attached survey and return to me at (ibo.nagano@yahoo.com) and type “Amanita Survey” into the subject line. If the attachment doesn't work you can request a copy of the survey from me by sending an email with "Survey Request" in the subject line.

Your survey doesn't really cover all of the effects. I was having out of body experiences while fighting the paramedics thinking I had to kill them or I would never live again (God told me).

True, the survey only includes a partial list of the wide-ranging effects of Amanita muscaria. If there are effects that you have experienced that are outside those listed in the survey, please include a description of these effects in the “Notes” section at the bottom.
