Amanita Muscarias...what's the deal?

Hi I have read that Amanita Muscaria mushrooms, which are legal, can cause trips too, even though they don't contain psilocybin. I have heard about some people tripping on these, some say it's pleasant, some say it isn't. I also have seen extremely different dosages being used...ranging from 3 grams to 20 grams. I heard that generally you have to eat 10 or so grams to trip on these shrooms. I know this could differ because potency varies, but what would be an estimated dosage for Grade A Amanita's? Are these shrooms actually any good? Is it dangerous to use them? If you've used them before, or know about them, please give me some insight!

most people dont want to use them for phsychedellic purposes. and yes i know i probably spelled that wrong. people dont use them psychoactively because they contain ibotenic acid. this causes nausea, vomiting, and other unpleasant effects. muscimol, which is the main psychoactive chemical, greatly differs from psilocybin and psilocin. it does not produce a "trip" or a mind expanding experience, but more like a disillusionment. you get blurred vision blurred blah blah blah. in my opinion i would say its like alcohol compared to marijuana, but thats probably because i have a negative opinion of alcohol.
dont listen to anything i just said because im inexperienced and am simply regurgitating information i have found for you.
....about that whole nausea thing with the ibotenic acid, i heard that heat breaks it down, so you can prepare amanitas in an oven, or smoke them so you dont ingest so much of it, but thats just what ive heard.

Amanita muscaria is the 2nd biggest cause of people ending up in emergency rooms in Colorado, among mushrooms (Chlorophyllum molybdites is 1st).
Most people seem to find it unpleasant. I have seen reports by people who claimed to find it OK.
When you consider that a visit to the ER without insurance will cost you about US$1000 at a minimum, you can guess that those people must have been feeling pretty bad to go to one.
My guess is that most of them thought they'd get something like psilocybin containing mushrooms, and were very unpleasantly surprised with what they got.
There have been a few fatalities from eating them. They tend to be caused by excessive quantities or mixing with other drugs (e.g., alcohol).
So, if you decide to eat them, start with a low dose. That way, if you get sick and it's really unpleasant, you won't get as sick. If it turns out that you like it, you can always take a bit higher dose another time.
Remember, if you take some and start getting sick, the people who died took a bunch (e.g., 24 fresh caps). If you take a small amount, you won't die, although you might get really sick.
Happy mushrooming!

A friend of mine ate one and loved it. 24 fresh caps of anything.. is just foolish. I still haven't been able to find any of my own, but my friend who found one in his back yard.. he immediately gobbled it down, and then he told me he had an amazingly wonderful trip. Said he felt real sedate, limbs heavy, and just sat there for hours incapacitated hallucinating like mad.. and while I've heard 'they dont make you see things', this guy wouldn't make something like that up, it's totally out of character. A friend of his apparently had a similar experience. 3 more of my friends, years ago, ate some dried. I saw 2 of them, and they were obviously way gone.

Hi psychopsilocybin, The ingredient which causes nausea and vomiting is muscarine, not ibotenic acid, which is but one of the two primarty active ingredients in Amanita muscaria and four other species including the pantherina which is stronger than the muscaria. mj And all are right, the majority of people who use it do not like it whatsoever, but never listen when people warn them about it. mj

I think A's get a bad rap. they wont do what psilly's do they never were taken as a sub. the effect is more narcotic dream-like and then where we all want to be euphoria. It seems to me that the folks that don't like them are the ones who think they are gonna be like the other mush trips

I ate one large and one small dried amanita muscaria var formosa caps I had found near a school. Not sure what I did wrong, but all it gave me was extremely bad nausea and then vomiting, not fun at all. It wasn't dried completely though, and I did eat the entire mushroom instead of just the cap since I heard the chemicals were spread throughout the entire mushroom. Next spring I might give smoking them with cannabis a try, but from what I've seen they're not pleasant at all and I doubt I'll try eating them again.
