Heating while incubating
    #790671 - 08/01/02 02:01 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have Creeper and SA spores on PF Tek jars. I innoculated 2 jars almost 3 weeks ago. A few days ago, I saw a big spot of mycelium. It is the only innoculation hole colonising. Im pretty sure it is because it is not warm enough. So what my question is, how should I warm my jars up? Im thinking of putting a heating pad on low and putting it on top of the box that they are incubating in, but dont know if it will be too hot. Do you think this will work? suggestions?

I've heard horror stories about heating pads - mycologists leaving their crops for 45 minutes, and returning to find their jars/casings steaming.

The problem with heating pads is that there's no 'warm' setting, just ON and OFF. Even with a thermostat the temps will fluctuate too rapidly to be good.

Do a search for an incubator tek utilizing a submersible water heater and two Sterilite or Rubbermaid bins stacked one inside the other. This provides for good temperature buffering and well-distributed heat.

you will need a themometer to do this. optimum temp is 86F, lower or higher slows growth- TMC.

Thanks.

To the people who said incubating is heating, I thought that incubating was when jars colonize. sorry if that was confusing.
