Incubation & Dessicant
    #3109184 - 09/08/04 07:00 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Been doing some more reading, while trying to make a better incubator. I have noticed some people keep dessicant in their tub in tub incubators. My question is if there is any benefit to keep the humidity down inside the incubator?

Why would you want to do that??? And I don't remember seeing anyone saying that??

Are you sure you read it right??

It was from a while ago, not sure why anybody would want to do that either. I'll post a link when I can find one. I know that I saw a few pictures of tub in tub incubators that had jars or sponges of dessicant.

I was tired, but I'm sure I read it right.

Looks like it is for preventing standing water inside the tub and keeping the vermiculite dry to prevent contams. Anybody know if there is any truth to this?

haha, well not the person you were probably expecting to post but I'd have to agree....humidity is usually our friend, not our foe. Unless there was a constant standing water problem, say a waterfall in your closet or something, I can't see humidity being a prob during incubation. Just keep your jars in a dark, clean container and you will have no problems, at least not from my experiences.

Ok they make wet and dry incubators right? right! In our field of interest MUSHROOMS do they like dry or moist air? Now enter into the picture filter patches now where do you think this leads us? You can incubate at any reasonable (30-95%) RH factor depending on your situation, what we don't want here is moisture being drawn away from our substrates so the higher the better unless substrates are totally sealed and that is something we growing shrooms do not want to do (cut off gas exchange!) The key word here is "dehydration" any RH thats controls this is fine. If anyone needs a further clue I will try to put it in simpler terms.

I never even gave the humidity factor a thought when it comes to my incubation proccess. As a matter of fact, You all know I use a space heater in a hall closet as my incubator and I am quite sure the humidity levels in there are close to 10% or less.Just for the record I have never had any noticable drying out of the jars.

I didn't want to cover the inside of the incubator with perlite, but I put a tupperware container full of it in there. It's small enough that I have to put water in it every two or three days, but I keep my humidity at about 50% this way. Since I've done this, I've noticed a faster growth on the jars since switching from being under my bed at room temps. Maybe it's just the 80-84 degree temps in the incubator though.

I'll tell you I know for a fact that it's not even close to 10% or less! In the dead of winter RH levels are above 20% most places, the desert being the exception. Also love is such a strong word :peace: how about content?

Definitely the warmer temps ZA, humidity just helps keep dehydration to a minimum especially in WBS bags with filter patches (where I've noticed the biggest difference).

I have never even really considered humidity as a factor during incubation, maybe we are thinking a little too hard? Keeping your temps in the mid 80's I think is crucial, but as far as humidity I'm not too sure. The jars from my experiences have never dried out, nor have I seen any lost to contamination, so I don't know what to say other than keep them warm!
