how to make a simple incubator
    #1003074 - 10/29/02 11:30 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

You need:

* 2 similar nestable bins
* 4 jars
* fish tank heater
* something as a cover (styrofoam, blanket)

Fill one of the bins with water. Put the 4 jars and the fish tank heater in. Fill the water until just above the jars.

Put the other bin on top of the jars.

Cultures can be incubated in the top bin. Regulate the fish tank heater so that the temperature inside is suitable for the species being cultivated.
Isolated the top with a styrofoam board or a blanket.

Hasn't this same design been posted about a thousand times before already?

Another no frills design thats straight up ghetto. Igloo cooler and a 20oz bottle. Turn faucet on hottest water u can get and fillup 20oz. bottle and let it sit in cooler with jars. Have to change water maybe 2x a day but its free. And you get to check jars daily for contams and such.

The problem with yours is that there is not all that much room in a styrofoam cooler. The set up that Una posted is good because of 2 reasons. 1) since the water forms a liquid wall between the plastic containers, the heat gets more evenly distributed. 2) Two really big rubbermaids are cheaper than one really big cooler, (I haven't seen too many styrofoams that are as big as a 35 gal rubbermaid. )

Well I was thinking about doing this type of incubator for a while, and today I got off my lazy ass and went to the pet shop to get a submersable heater. After being directed to them by an employee, I picked the Visi-Therm by Aquarium Systems. So I get home and take it out of the box and start reading the directions, when I see this little diagram that says this heater needs to be up-right, and there is a water line, exactly like the one's that have to clamped to a jar. This posed a problem because, as illustrated in Una's pictures, the heater needs to be in a horizontal position. So has anybody used this kind of heater successfully in the above illustrated picture? Do all "submersables" have a water lines, or do I need to get off my lazy ass again? Thanks.

I used more or less the same design as Una and find it serves it's purpose brilliantly. I have my incubater at 27c and my 50 w heater regulates the water temperature without a problem.

When i said cooler i meant a igloo that hold about 6 half pints which is what i use since i only had 6.  Not knocking una's seutp its alot nicer and more maintenace free but costs some cash just thers more than one way to skin a cat :laugh:

Sorry man, if you wanna make one like in the picture, you'll need to get up off yer ass again (I know, I know, it sucks) or you could fill a big ass jar with water, put the heater you have in that (the right way) and put the whole thing in your incubator. I never really got that to work out too well though.

Goddamnitshitfuckshitcocksuckershit. I really don't feel like going back, damn. I swear to god, I hate buying shit for this hobby cause I go into random stores to buy supplies and half the time the employees ask me what the supplies are for, not in an interogating way, they're just looking to help. See if growing was legal, (which it won't be, I'm just ranting) I could go into a store and explain to the employee's exactly what I need, but no, I gotta look like a dumbass, and make a lot of expensive learning mistakes. crappity crap crap.

Oh I know, it just would be easier if I could just be like "I'm building an incubator using two rubbermaids and I need a submersable that can be in a horizontal position." But hey, it wouldn't be such a cool hobby if everyone was doing it.

Yea man you can use that heater. Ir really dosent matter if its submersable or not. I took my dubbermaid and cut out a hole. I also cut off some plastic mounting hardware that was on the heater with a dremel. I unserted the heater in the hole and put jb weld around the inside of the hole to seal it. I just use the rubbermaids top that it came with and I have no clue why you used a towel instead of the top it came with?

They are there to keep the upper bin above the heater.

For a more elaborate description of this setup (the original design was by Alien) read http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm .

There is no need to fret about questions from employees at various stores. I buy all my supplies at different stores so one person doesn't see the whole picture.
Rubbermaid tubs=clothes storage
Submersible heater=the old one in my aquarium just took a dump
Bulk white millet and oyster shell=my sister sent me for supplies for her birds
vermiculite/perlite=parents asked me to stop for garden supplies
etc.,etc.

I've actually never had to answer any ?'s, since I know beforehand what I want.

No worries :cool:

So now here's the bitch of all bitches. So I decided to get a new, fully submersible heater, which was cool cause I found one for $10 less than the origional. So I go get the bitch come home and fill up one of the rubbermaids with water, AND THE BITCH HAS A LEAK, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!! God doesn't want me to have a good incubator, so I scrambled around the house looking for solutions, luckily I found some PVC cleaner& sealer. Put that shit on there and its drying as I type, I hope the PVC is like Vanilla Ice, solving my problem.

I see the term "stealth' is lost on you. Seriously, the goal is to aquire your materials and get out. How do you manage to get into a screaming match with a fvcking Wal-Mart employee over cat litter and some jars???

It may or may not be giving the most even distribution but I'd like to use SixTango's idear. (S)He's got a metal filing cabinet with a heat mat under it. I'd never be seen but the fact that you can lock the fucker sure would help this soul rest easier.

Lock it for what, protection from the jar raiding pirates that are indigenous of your parts? I like the styrofoam cooler because it seems to keep in the heat very well. Metal is a poor insulator, styrofoam is a great insulator. But hey, different folks, different strokes, hehe get it, strokes.

I bought a fish tank heater yesterday (my 3rd one after many mishaps) and the guy at the pet store asked me how big my tank was...

I had to catch myself from saying "Oh, I dont have fish, I just grow mushrooms"

I ended up blurting something out about buying it for my sister. he went into this long respnse about how if it wasn't the right size I can take it back or whatever..i just wanted to get out of there!

I can't handle people...

Composure man, composure. You should always be prepared for questions like that when you are buying growing supplies and need to ask for assistance. Have a good response ready for them. Better yet do a lot of homework and minimize the need to involve any salespeople at all.

I seriously doubt that even if you bought all your supplies at one store someone would think hey that guy is growing magic mushrooms. And also couldnt you use this same incubation method for you fruiting chamber also since its gettign cold outside.

grrrr i responded to this thread while readin the first page (didnt see 2nd one lol)

In my experiments I have always had trouble when I used a bottom heated incubator. The media dried out. The problem is less with a heat source from above (incandescent lamp shining down).

But over the years I have arrived at the conclusion that an incubator almost always hurts the moisture level in the substrate.

So now I accept the somewhat slower growth of the mycelium in the winter - at least as long as the temperature is 15 centrigrade or so (the lowest temp at which spores will germinate within a week).

I've found that the easiest and cheapest method is to buy a cheap night light,plug it into an extention cord,plug it in and drop it into a styrofoam cooler.I've always have had problems with contamination when using water and a fishtank heater.
Using the above method,i can keep my incubator at 90F with a 7 watt light,about 80F with a 4 watt bulb. Simple and cheap!!

yeah.. i like that idea... and you can cover it in tin foil to keep it dark in there...

well.. have you done it this way (the tin foil thing)? and what were your results by doing so..

a cooler you say.. hrmm.m.... maybe need to test out bigger bulbs and bigger setups....

but it seems that the aquarium heater is lacking... well... if bigger space is used.... if i were to have a big area to heat up... a 60w bulb well be doing better then.. lets say 250w heater in a bottle....

Lots better to put your jars in a light resistant bag,or wrap with foil. Works great! No water to grow bacteria/contaminates..Real easy to control the temp by using a differnt wattage bulb or propping the cover open a little. I've been using a styrofoam cooler that set me back $1.99! Give it a try.

In reply to:

I have the quintessential GHETTO incubator. I have my jars in a cardboard box by the heat vent. you know how I can keep them at the right temp? The thermostat.

Bro please tell me you don't have your heat turned up to 83 to 84 degrees.

Yeah there are hot spots.. I was thinking about putting the bulb in a slightly vented tin can. The reason I said it was better not to wrap the bulb is that it would over heat it,melt the nightlight/burn out the bulb.

If you really want to get a sales person of your back start telling them the truth. If they ask what the heater is for, tell them its for an incubator. If they ask what you need the incubater for, tell them you need it to keep the mycelium warm and then go into alot of technical talk about mycelium. Some guy working at a pet shop is going to be so far out of his depth he's just going to look at you and just say "uh-huh, well I really don't know enough about that to help ya, I'll be over here if ya have any more questions"
I do the same when I buy anything for illegal purposes. Just tell the truth and omit the parts like that the mycelium your incubating will soon fruit a illegal psychodelic mushroom :smile:
