thanks for the info guys. sounds like the heating pad would be a good option. are you putting the pad INSIDE your chamber or just underneath? also, are you using a styrofoam cooler or an aquarium? do you use a blanket or anything to keep the heat in? thanks & peace

My inccubation chamber is a Rubbermaid-style plastic container, it's about 1' x 1.5' x 1', the heating pad is inside on the bottom (it's a perfect fit). My problem was with too much heat, even on the lowest setting, so the jars are elevated on a shoebox away from the heating pad surface so they don't over heat.

i see. so you don't have any problems with too much dry heat from the pad? are all your jars typically successful... or have you had dry outs before?

This is actually my first batch, it's 10 1/2 pint jars. They are doing remarkably well, it has been 12 days since innoculation, the first 4 or 5 days they were without heating until I picked up the pad. I just finished looking at them a few minutes ago, 4 are 100% colonized, 5 are at least 95% done and one is 80% done (because one hole didn't start colonizing so there was a gap). No dryness related problem whatsoever, in fact most jars have condensation on the sides. I think the factors which would cause dry out are not enough moisture in substrate when prepared and prolonged colonization time (more than 3 weeks).

Let`s back-up for a minute. If you put something wet on top of something hot it WILL dry it. In such an incubation chamber you`ve got to keep the humidity up there.

By the way, condensation on the inside of the jars means your baking moisture out of your substrate.

here is a setup of mine, the heater in the bottom works great, on the right is the out put end of my fish tank pump. for me to cold shock i just unplug the heater for 24 hours and then boom. a ton of pins. for cakes i keep the top of my tank pretty sealed, for casings i crack it a bit to drop the humidity down. if you have questions PM me. oh thats a 100 W heater, fully submersable set to 88 degrees and 1/2 inch galvanized steel mesh as the shelf.

Just a reply to that Sunbeam body pad. Go to ourhouse.com. I think they sell it for cheap. Use dealcatcher.com or another service like that to get the coupons that are available very often. It's like fifteen bucks off a thirty dollar order. And their prices are already pretty competitive. So, that's that
