Heating Incubation Chamber in Confined Space
    #2338514 - 02/15/04 08:43 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I am planning out how to start my first grow. I am considering using a 100W light bulb covered in heat-sinks to heat the incubation chamber. I plan on controlling the light bulb with a plug-in inline thermostat (Home Depot SKU#197598). I figured that since the light bulb will be covered by the heat-sinks, it will not introduce light into the chamber, and it will also help radiate heat into the air. I may also attach small fans to the heat sinks as well, to further aid in radiating heat, and circulating air. My incubation chamber will be approximately 8"Wx17"Dx20"H. I may also make a shelf, thus creating something like 2 "floors".

My question is:
1.) How should I arrange the .5-pint jars so that they all get heated equally?
2.) where should I place the thermostat, so that it gets the most accurate temps?

Thanks.

Well I'm a noob at shroom cultivation, but this seems like a maths puzzle so i'll take a stab.

Arrange the jars in a circle, and the light source in the very middle. The height of the light above the jars will be the way you control how hot the air around the jars gets.

the case is only 8" wide, so i can only fit 2 jars next to each other, but yes in ideal circumstances the circle layout would be the ideal layout.

I can stack the jars on top of each other, but unfortunately, i cant arrange them in a circle since my case can only fit 2jars by aprox. 4 or 5 jars.

What about using a heating pad? That would require less work and it too has a way to control heat....in a heating pad there is wire and im sure you could take off the outer cover and conform the wire to your desired working area, just a thought, as I still am a nub.

yea, a heating pad would work pretty well also, but would i be able to get hot enough temps from it? My ambient is like 66-67F.

I use a reptile heating pad underneath a sealed box. It keeps the temp at 85-86 consistantly. The one I have is for a 10-20 gallon aquarium and can be bought at any petstore for under $20 or on ebay for around 5$.

if you nest 2 rubbermade containers of the same size together and get a fish tank heater there really is no contest that is the best way...it heats the bottom and all four sides...giveing you quick incubation...but remember once the outsides of the jars are white give them 1 week more or you will wish you had.. :bong:

I have a seedling heating pad, raises ambient about 20 degrees at max

so 67 would be come 87.

why?

I thought after they are all white on the outside, they are supposed to finish colonizing in the casings for a couple days, then be cold shocked in the fridge for a couple hours, then be transferred into the fruiting chamber.  Did I misread the teks?

but wouldn't the center colonize faster if, when all the outside is fully colonized, you broke it up and cased it, then kept it in your incubation chamber for a couple days? That way it will get a burst of fresh oxygen, and will be mixed up with a bunch of fully colonized particles, which should also speed up colonization of the remainder of the substrate.

Am I correct?
