hah... thats funny...
In reply to:
There is no need to fret about questions from employees at various stores. I buy all my supplies at different stores so one person doesn't see the whole picture. Rubbermaid tubs=clothes storage Submersible heater=the old one in my aquarium just took a dump Bulk white millet and oyster shell=my sister sent me for supplies for her birds vermiculite/perlite=parents asked me to stop for garden supplies etc.,etc.
well... not your situation.. but the "what if they ask me what im gonna do with" questions.... but most of them are stupid as hell... what do you think im gonna do with a styrofoam cooler... thermometer... cat litter.... polyfil... and err canning jars.... usually they cant figure out what im doing.. and of course i look suspicious as hell.... allways walking around with black trench coat.... shaved head... and sometimes eyeliner w/ eye shadow....
muhahhahah.. well.. i usually ask them if they want to refuse to sell me the things or to leave me alone.. and they usually leave me alone... a few occations they yelled at me... so what.. i got yelled at by a stranger...
usually i think they think that i am making a bomb or something... if i wanted to do that i would goto home depot.... ;]

Ha, thats funny I always run into that situation as well. When I buy the jars, and canning suppies I say its for my mom. As for the verm and peat, I say I have house plants in my room. Usually I get the weird look, but what-ever.

I see the term "stealth' is lost on you. Seriously, the goal is to aquire your materials and get out. How do you manage to get into a screaming match with a fvcking Wal-Mart employee over cat litter and some jars??? Try going 'undercover' as a prep. Khakis and a button down or a pullover/polo style shirt. Smile, pay cash and get the fvck out!

I get moisture buildup in my styrofoam cooler, I really don't think there's anything you can do about it.

It may or may not be giving the most even distribution but I'd like to use SixTango's idear. (S)He's got a metal filing cabinet with a heat mat under it. I'd never be seen but the fact that you can lock the fucker sure would help this soul rest easier.

Lock it for what, protection from the jar raiding pirates that are indigenous of your parts? I like the styrofoam cooler because it seems to keep in the heat very well. Metal is a poor insulator, styrofoam is a great insulator. But hey, different folks, different strokes, hehe get it, strokes.

I bought a fish tank heater yesterday (my 3rd one after many mishaps) and the guy at the pet store asked me how big my tank was...
I had to catch myself from saying "Oh, I dont have fish, I just grow mushrooms"
I ended up blurting something out about buying it for my sister. he went into this long respnse about how if it wasn't the right size I can take it back or whatever..i just wanted to get out of there!
I can't handle people...

Composure man, composure. You should always be prepared for questions like that when you are buying growing supplies and need to ask for assistance. Have a good response ready for them. Better yet do a lot of homework and minimize the need to involve any salespeople at all.

I seriously doubt that even if you bought all your supplies at one store someone would think hey that guy is growing magic mushrooms. And also couldnt you use this same incubation method for you fruiting chamber also since its gettign cold outside.
grrrr i responded to this thread while readin the first page (didnt see 2nd one lol)

In my experiments I have always had trouble when I used a bottom heated incubator. The media dried out. The problem is less with a heat source from above (incandescent lamp shining down).
But over the years I have arrived at the conclusion that an incubator almost always hurts the moisture level in the substrate. So now I accept the somewhat slower growth of the mycelium in the winter - at least as long as the temperature is 15 centrigrade or so (the lowest temp at which spores will germinate within a week).
